Farmers have fertilizer, and diesel fuel for their equipment. The combination of the two will allow them to remove highway bridges. Since most street gangs lack engineering companies with bridging equipment this will stop the gangs quite nicely. However it will also trap you in with the street gangs. And that is a situation that you most definitely want to avoid.

Frighteningly good point. If you must get out - get out early.

"Basically concerns about frost lines, agriculture and the like will be very secondary in the first few months. Staying away from other people will be the key to survival."

The bottom line quote.

I don’t make any claim to be a survival expert but if someone wanted to disappear from society, the deep forests of western Oregon and Washington would fit the bill.

One problem though, would be clearing enough land to grow food on without being noticed. But if you’re far enough removed from roads I believe it could be done.

I think it would also be possible to live as a hunter-gatherer, at least initially, but then you’d have to cover alot of territory and would run a high risk of encountering someone.

To illustrate how easy it is to disappear into the woods: a guy and his daughter lived in forest park for something like 2 years without anyone noticing. This is basically an island of forest inside the city of Portland, with trails going all through it and people biking and jogging it every day. Nobody knew they were there until they came out on their own.

Take this with a grain of Salt; as numerous studies pointed out, in an economic collapse due to zombie infestation, you want to live ABOVE the frost line..... zombies freeze in winter, for the most part. This allows for relative freedom of movement.

there's "banana belts" in Washington and even in British Columbia....in the north, the growing season is shorter but you can grow most things....

did you know that they grow peaches in British Columbia?....well, they do...

Heating with wood - which I did years ago - requires a working chain saw, access to gasoline, and replacement parts.

You can do it with hand saws. (Think of the times before the internal combustion engine.) It's just a lot of work, and you have to prestock saws and blades. A couple extra axes is also a good idea.

His map shows that parts of the coastal Pacific NW are also viable. Actually, if you’re planning for a major nuclear attack on the US, southern coastal Oregon is one of the best places to be. There are no targets in the area, and prevailing winds will carry the fallout away.

I have a house out in the sticks of Colorado for just this purpose. I am on 25 acres and I have by far the smallest parcel of land. This is rural, shit kicker Colorado, not shiny jet setter ski Colorado.

I have learned a few things spending time out there. People that live like that are different. They may not all get along but I'll tell you, when the SHTF, aint nobody coming into that community and getting out alive. They are all armed to the teeth, they've got no use for government and little use for city slickers.

And when say armed to the teeth, I am talking arsenal level. And that's just the stuff they talk about.
