Word For The Day, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 - Augean stable
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 01/20/2010

Posted on 01/20/2010 6:13:29 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

Augean stable • \aw-JEE-un-STAY-bul\ • noun

a condition or place marked by great accumulation of filth or corruption

Example sentence:

The presidency of Ulysses S. Grant was marred by his refusal to clean out the Augean stables of his own administration

Did you know?
"Augean stable" most often appears in the phrase "clean the Augean stable," which usually means "clear away corruption" or "perform a large and unpleasant task that has long called for attention." Augeas, the mythical king of Elis, kept great stables that held 3,000 oxen and had not been cleaned for thirty years -- until Hercules was assigned the job. Hercules accomplished this task by causing two rivers to run through the stables. The word "Augean" is sometimes used by itself, too -- it has come to mean "extremely difficult and usually distasteful." We can refer to "Augean tasks," "Augean labor," or even "Augean clutter."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

They always seem to leave out the part about the rise of civilization on Atlantis, the cataclysm and the migration of the Celts from the Iberian refugium.

you tried to grow veggies this past summer didn’t you? how’d that work out? if things get bad, guess i will try to grow food instead of flowers. While SG could easily grow veggies, given her master gardener status, would she EAT THEM if things got bad? ; )

if your kids contracted scurvy while starving, you’d not grow and feed them zucchini?
do i sound like those INSIPID bud light commercials that make me want to shoot myself in the head, which are played NONSTOP during hockey games. If me and buster were hanging from a cliff, which one of us would you save? OR equally annoying, the guy who has the girl blurting out I LOVE YOU, in a bar and he can’t form the words. Honest to God, i cannot ABIDE those commercials. they make me hate women for one thing! i would slap either of my girls if they acted that way!

They need to resurrect the real men of genius commercials. Those were funny! And we’ll eat fruit to avoid scurvy. ;)

I have been trying to explain to my son that sometimes things have to really get bad before people are willing to make a change - in other words, you have to hit barak-bottom.

I did some container gardening - used big flower pots to grow some banana peppers, bell peppers and jalapenos - and had those hanging thingies for tomatoes..... the only problem I had was ants. I had not done a good job on my back yard this year letting the grass grow higher than the front (all enclosed fencing so no one could see it) - I was lazy. And in the process I did not fertilize/treat for ants....so I had ants all in my veggies... but this year I will take are of the ant problem and do a few more veggies - but they were not hard to do at all. I will probably do some squash and maybe some green onions - and some herbs.

Oliver Crowell worked that phrase into the royal (no pun intended) a$$-chewing he gave Parliament in 1645. It applies to the current bunch in Washington as well:

Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defil’d this sacred place, and turn’d the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress’d, are yourselves become the greatest grievance.
Your country therefore calls upon me to cleanse this Augean stable, by putting a final period to your iniquitous proceedings in this House; and which by God’s help, and the strength he has given me, I am now come to do;

Finally, more hope for a change-

Is Teddy rolling in his grave
Since Brown has turned the tables?
Will the cleaning of DC begin
Like the fabled Augean stables?

Are the ‘rats running for cover
As the country takes a right?
Just like roaches scampering
When someone turns on a light

Not only will he refuse to clean the Augean stable in our White House, but he is clueless about everything else too.

All I could think of when I heard of Southers’ abrupt withdrawal from consideration was that Obama is going to need another bus-it is WAY too crowded under the present one-

With apologies to Queen-
Another one under the bus, another one under the bus
And another one’s gone, and another one’s gone
Another one under the bus...
