IIRC, there was a recall on early model SR-9s. Ruger semi autos are decent working guns that can fit a budget, but I wouldn't think of them as anywhere near a "first tier" level self defense gun. I just bought a Springfield Armory XD45 compact and have heard fabulous things about the 9mm XDs. I also own an H&K P30 9mm and consider that a top quality "first tier" firearm. You might also consider the Sig P250 9mm.

Thanks for the info - times like these I wish I lived near a bigger city - I don’t think I could find all of those to look at here (pop approx 80,000).
