Cal Mervyn calls Dollar. Johnny goes on to Primrose Camp. Pop doesn't have a cabin for him, even though they seem empty. Pop isn't so talkative. The nephew isn't too friendly. Dollar buys some Chesterfield cigarettes. Johnny quizzes the nephew about the new power plant being built in Tulsa, and the nephew says that it is about finished. To Johnny's knowledge, there is no new power plant being built in Tulsa. Dollar moves on and meets a local uranium prospector named Jed Marsh. Jed says that Pop has no nephew in Tulsa. In fact he has no relatives. Jed tells Johnny that he found a car half-buried under a rock slide at the bottom of a cliff. Johnny goes with him and they dig to where they can open the car door. Inside is a dead man, the other man who had been wounded by the state police at the roadblock.
Dollar calls Lieutenant Mervyn to relate that he has discovered the stolen car that Nitzen gang used in it's robbery in the Mountains of Santa Rita National Forest. Bardell still doesn't want to rent Johnny a cabin, despite the fact that the lights don't work on his rented car. The "nephew" tells Pop to get a cabin ready for Dollar. Mrs. Bardell makes Johnny some sunnyside-up eggs and ham. Johnny senses something is wrong when he gets her to talk about her 20 year old daughter, Jenny. She admits that they are all in danger, and that the place is a powder-keg. (... continued next week ...)

The threatening letters are composed from words cut from newspapers and pasted on sheets of paper. They have been married for little more than a year and he is an intrepretive photographer. They live at the Estate of her uncle, Avery Fairchild, who doesn't like Bruce. Isabelle wants Marlowe to stay at the guest cottage a while, posing as an old USC college friend so as not to arouse suspicion. She also says that a man in a white Panama Hat has been lurking around lately. Upon leaving the Pelikan Inn, Marlowe is nearly run over by a man wearing a white Panama Hat. Marlowe goes to the Fairchild Estate where he meets Uncle Avery. As Avery is talking disparagingly of Bruce, the latter walks in. Marlowe engages Bruce in conversation about photography on their way to the guest cottage, which contains Bruce's photographic studio. Later, Marlowe is awakened by a noise outside. When he investigates he is punched out. When he awakes he finds a gold cigarette lighter inscribed to "Skipper". Isabelle says that her cousin John "Skipper" Martin has come for a visit. Later, Marlowe runs into a man holding a .38 revolver on him. The man thinks that Marlowe is Martin. He says that his name is Brock, and he is here to collect the $10,000 gambling debt loan. Marlowe then locates Martin at the Wilshire Gardens and poses as Brock on his collection run. He then calls Isabelle who tells him that Bruce has been kidnapped and a ransom of $50,000 has been demanded. Marlowe then sees Martin enter the abode of flaming red haired Carla Winters. Avery agrees to give Isabelle the $50,000. Bruce returns. Avery will not allow Bruce to talk to the police because he doesn't like publicity. Avery tells Marlowe that he will receive his payment tomorrow. Marlowe looks around the guest cottage before he leaves. There is a portrait of Carla Winters. Marlowe calls Ybarra but gets Sergeant Neely who tells him that the Lieutenant is at Martin's place. Marlowe calls there and learns that Martin has been shot. Marlowe finds a piece of paper that ties the case all together. Marlowe goes back into the Fairchild Estate and says that Bruce staged his own kidnapping and then killed Martin, and that Carla Winters has the money. Martin was blackmailing Bruce and Carla to pay off his gambling debts. The piece of pare was a department store receipt for one Panama hat. Marlowe returns to his place on Franklin Avenue.
