Geology Picture of the Week, Jan. 10-16, 2010: Dolly Sods
Various

Tried to come up with something different, so I went with something local over in West Virginia. I've been here a couple of times. Nice hiking. In the fall, some of the brush turns this incredible shade of red. Click 'em all for 2x bigger.

Bear Rocks

Elakala Falls (not far from Blackwater Falls)

TOPICS: Arts/Photography; Education; Outdoors; Science
KEYWORDS: ancient; appalachians; rocks; westvirginia
Also must mention: the Halemaumau Overlook Webcam (click the link) has been putting on quite a show the past two days -- high lava levels mean a very active pond. At dawn (around 7 AM, which is 12 PM on the East Coast, 9 AM on the West Coast) the HVO museum cam gets the glow and the emissions plume.

Oh nos!! the glaciers have retreated.

CAUTION: UNEXPLODED ORDNANCES MAY BE ENCOUNTERED!

Dolly Sods - including the Bear Rocks Preserve - was an artillery training area during World War II. Please, stay on existing trails, keep children close by and do not pick up or remove shells or shell fragments. More information can be found by visiting the Dolly Sods Region Project on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website.
