It’s a crime to run into someone on the ski slopes?
This very thing happened to my brother many years ago. Bro was on skis and snowboarder (new sport back then) came out of nowhere, like a bat outta hell. He slammed into bro and then took off. Ski patrol never found him. Bro ended up with three metal pins in his femur, and had several surgeries.
No more so than running into someone with your car.
It is now, in fact, it has been for a number of years. The sheriffs take it very seriously when it’s hit and run.

Fortunately, since he doesn’t fit the profile of a snowboarder he should be easy to spot.

'run into'??? Sounds more like it was run over.
It’s worse than the highways, where all it takes is the ability to fog a mirror to get a license.
On the slopes, you have kids and snowboarders (apparently) on the same slopes. That’s an accident waiting to happen. I guess it did in this case.
What further complicates it is that the whole point of being on the slopes is to have fun and slide around and do cool stuff. That is actually against the law on the roads. So, in a way, you could compare this to a kid on a tricycle getting run over by a race car as the trike tries to cross right after a hairpin curve. So, who’s fault is it?
Apparently she is stable now but compound fracture of the femur IS life-threatening, can kill a number of ways: hemorrhage from lacerated femoral artery, fat embolism in the lungs (from released marrow) and infection if open fracture or surgery necessary. And it’s an indicator of possible internal injury as it requires a lot of force to break the largest bone in the body and other injuries are likely.
Well it certainly wasn’t my bro’s fault. He was an expert skier and very safety conscious. The early snowboarders were hooligans who treated the slopes like they were their own personal skateboard parks. They really should segregate the skiers from the snowboarders. Many ski patrols are extremely serious about the reckless snowboarders. First off, they revoke their lift ticket, and often ban them from the resort totally.
And they also do the same with reckless skiers, as they should.
Funny how it’s always snowboarder runs into skier - not the other way around. Well not really funny - but true.
A lot, I will not say all or most, of snowboarders act like punks “It’s all about me and my fun”.
Rather stupid to have them both on the same slopes. They designate levels of runs, so it's not that difficult to designate separate kiddie slopes and those for boarders.
to be fair, the last time I went skiing was around 1981. It was too cold, too expensive, too far away and the lines were too long. It just was not worth all the hassle.
Maybe things have changed.
I put the very fear of Christ in him when I caught up to him, but he was saved from a good hard punch in the mouth by the fact that I couldn't tell if he was under 18 or not.
I still prefer no-snowboard zones such as Deer Valley, Alta, or Taos. Don't like the snowboard punks at all.
I had the pleasure of chasing down a drunk punk after he went full spead between me and my son who was laying on the side of a trail. There was about 3 feet between us, son was tired and we were out of the way. The punk went out of his way to pull the stunt. Momma was coming up behind us so I knew she would take care of the little guy.
Punk had a head start on me but gravity likes me more so he knew it was a matter of time. He and his 3 buds stopped to wait on me, punk just happened to stop at the edge of a steep slope on the side of the trail. A sideways sliding stop with a forearm/shoulder into punk resulted in him tumbeling backwards yelling “didn’t hurt”. Skis off and greeted punks friends, managed to convince them to finish the wooping he would have had if he had stuck around. I’m sure they didn’t have their buzz anymore after I let them go.
Son was OK, turned out punk barely missed him. It happened so fast and he kicked up so much snow on my son that I thought he ran right over him. Next time, I’ll be sure to yank the lift pass off of him and give to cops, not ski patrol. Ski patrol doesn’t want the popo involved.
” The early snowboarders were hooligans who treated the slopes like they were their own personal skateboard parks”
Agreed! Remember how they loved to load their boards w/snow just before getting on the lift and then dumping it on the folks in line below?
There are fewer punks out there now, it seems. Heavenly has set up a large park for boarders with half pipes and rails. It looks great for them and keeps them off the sloaps,
Glad to hear the Heavenly has segregated them. That’s the only solution.
I gave up skiing decades ago......I was playing piano professionally and realized that even a sprained finger would be a disaster. Don’t miss it at all.
