Mora fired; Carroll targeted, sources say

Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora has been fired, the first coach in team history to be let go after one season, and league sources say longtime USC coach Pete Carroll is being targeted as Mora's replacement.

Mora attended a meeting Friday morning with management, at which time he was told by Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke that he did not win enough games to save his job. The Seahawks ended the season on a four-game losing streak to finish 5-11.

Mora was shocked by his dismissal, believing that when he was called to Lieweke's office that he they would be in discussion about the team's vacant general manager's job, Seahawks sources said.

"This team, more importantly this community, means so much to me that it hurts not being able to see this through," Mora said in a team-issued statement. "I am disappointed I did not get the chance to complete my contract. This is a tough business that sometimes demands immediate gratification."

The Seahawks are floundering less than four years after they appeared in the Super Bowl. Seattle is 9-23 since its last playoff appearance in January 2008, after four consecutive NFC West titles, and now it's without a coach, general manager and president.

We've made a tough decision today," Leiweke said in a statement. "It became apparent after conducting an extensive internal audit that a new direction was needed to provide an opportunity for the organization to be successful. Today's decision, while difficult, is part of the process in building a franchise with a new vision in 2010."

Will Carroll be part of it? In a text message Friday, he said, "You know I haven't responded to a NFL question in two years." But a league source said Carroll is interested in the job and

What happened was that that second game we got our ass kicked. We just got our ass totally kicked. We didn't do diddly-poo offensively. I know. Wrong Jim Mora, but its still great

“Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora has been fired”

My tagline has been answered.

“Highly doubt Carroll will go for it”

Would prefer Bill “The Chin” Cowher.

You and Jim were probably the only ones.

Mora just isn’t a #1 guy. Nothing wrong with that, but some people are not the type of leader it takes to be a head coach.

University of Washington was wise to pass him up.

What kind of sanctions could USC face?

I am not sure, but I think one season. I can’t say for sure, since I am down here in Florida and still a new orleans saints fan.

They are still investigating Reggie Bush after 4 years, don’t expect anything soon.

Pete Carroll may be a great college coach, but his style is simply not for the NFL.

NFL players are in it for the $$$$$, college players are in it to get to the NFL.

Big difference.

Carroll sucked totally when he had the Patriots helm.

I believe her was here for two years, the first as assistant head coach/defensive backfield coach. The second as head coach.

When he took over the secondary his first year here, and it got WORSE, I knew that the man was not going to be a great head coach.

I have been calling for his job since about week three.

Carroll is not a good fit for the NFL, IMO. We had him up in NE for 3 years. And while he had an okay record, the players didn’t buy into his rah-rah brand of motivation. He is made for college, and is a superstar at SC.

Agreed although Bobby Grier didn't help matters for him.

Some guys just arent made for it.

I hope you get Carroll (I cant stand USC). Plus, you could get Zorn as OC :)

Yahoo did a good investigation - they can start there. My guess is they don’t want to know the truth.

If he played for Dallas instead of the New Orleans Katrinas he would be out of the league by now.

I have never been impressed with Pete at the pro level but who knows, maybe he’s learned something at college and can improve on his lukewarm pro record. We had Jim for QB coach for a few years and he took Hasslebroken from a “never was” and made him into an adequate signal caller.

I’d accept Zorn back to tutor the new rookie QB that we take in the first round this year.

I just hope you dont take Bradford. To me, he is Jason White pt 2. Hurt throwing shoulder twice, only accurate when he had 2 stud RB, 2 NFL WR, 1 NFL TE, 3 NFL OL against non-NFL defenses, no power in his deep outs.

I think Clausen goes 1 to St. Louis, and I dont like any of the other “1st rounders.” Two guys to keep a look out for are Canfield from Oregon State and Tim Hiller from Western Michigan.

Too bad you cant get Locker this year, that would be huge for ticket sales.
