If what I've read is correct, one of the things that Verizon requires for all its gadgets is a removable battery, which the current iPhone design does not have. I'm hoping that the iPhone would get off of AT&T exclusively -- that's what's kept me from buying one so far.

Same. I have a Droid now but would love to get the spouse an iPhone. I’m more excited about the iTablet though.

If you can get your hands one on eBay without the AT&T contract, they are easy jailbreak and unlock via some simple hacks. Then you just switch out the SIM card and have fun. I know people using Verizon, T-Mobile, etc. Jailbreaking your phone also gives you access to a bunch of great apps that Apple will not allow that make your iPhone 10x better.

The iPhone tanked in China due to Apples refusal to change anything on the phone to tailor it to the country and the population, so why should they do it for Verizon.
In most countries outside the USA, Apple and Jobs are the ugly americans.

thats not correct. Official iphone sales tanked in China because they’re stripped down version of the Blackmarket iphone that are sold in other parts of the world. To add insult to injury, the stripped down version cost ALOT more to buy as well, so most Chinese just get the blackmarket version

Given Verizon’s track record, this will be advertised now but happen sometime in late 2011 and not be available to existing customers without them paying $550 with new customers getting the phone for $50. People still will not be able to have a phone call and Internet access at the same time.

In China Apple refused to adopt the Chinese WIFi standard, but sold the phone for more money than the Chinese could buy a working black-market model for. It was still Apples refusal that created the problem.
And remember ATT, Sprint, Verizon, make their money off the network use and not phones. Additionally, they also compete for customers, by upgrading phones at a discount before contracts expire, which means that the phone has to be feature loaded, good performance, and cost very little.
Apple needs the carriers, more than the carriers need Apple.

You don't know what you are talking about, do you, Wooly. The iPhone is selling quite well in China... but not through the official channels, BECAUSE Apple DID change the iPhone to meet government demands to "tailor" it to the country. For example, Apple was required to remove the WIFI radio to meet Chinese regulations. The unlocked Gray Market iPhone is selling in the millions. . . for approximately $800 per unit. Some estimates put the number of unlocked iPhones in China at 2.5 million. The official iPhone is priced at over $1100 without WIFI. China Unicom reported that it sold only 5,000 iPhones the first 4 days of availability in October, but on December 10, they announced they had topped 100,000 sold, still far below expectations. However, the high price and the easy availability of the gray market, unlocked iPhones is strong competition to the official market. Apple not changing things had nothing to do with it.

A word of caution - this will only work with T-Mobile (in the U.S.) Unlocked iPhones won't work at all on the U.S. Verizon network, no matter what you do. Also, at the moment, unlocked iPhones on T-Mobile are limited to Edge, rather than 3G.

++ on the jailbreak apps!

... so why should they do it for Verizon.[?]

I am hoping they see the error of their ways if they want to gain marketshare. They got a boatload with AT&T, but that is only a fraction of the market. If they are happy with it, they will not relent, but if they are not, then they will come to some agreement with Verizon, et. al. since the went to Verizon first, but didnt come to an agreement. Could/would they do that again? In this economy? Someone will have to budge, and I doubt it will be the Verizon. IMO.

That’s what my sister and her boyfriend did, they both have their Iphones with T-mobile, took out the sim card, jailbroke it, and now have working T-mobile Iphones. If Verizon were to ever come out with an Iphone I’d get it. I am currently on a month to month with Verizon. But I dont think that its possible since Verizon doesnt deal with Sim cards

Same here. As long as iPhone is with AT&T I won’t get it.

Unless you are a die hard, “ I will buy anything Apple builds because I need the ego stroke” person. You may find that several companies are introducing many feature laden phones with better performance than the current iPhone this year and at a lower price.
But if you want only an iPhone get it now, because my guess is that unless Apple is willing to lower their unit price the carrier pays for the phone and tailors the phone to the carrier’s specs, you will see it only offered as a special order at full price from only one carrier.
And I am reminded of the time at Yalta when Joseph “Carrier” Stalin was told that Steve “iPhone” Jobs would not go along with his plan, Stalin asked, “How big of a cellular network does Apple have.”

Yeah, I hear ya... I'd switch to Verizon if possible. I've got an iPhone on AT&T in the SF Bay Area, and coverage is pretty bad. My employer gives out iPhones instead of Blackberries, and we can't even get reception inside much of the time!

No, that is a lie, Wooly. The Chinese government REFUSED to allow Apple to sell official iPhones with a Wifi radio installed. China Unicom set the price of the Apple iPhone at a price equivalent to $1100, not Apple. Apple did not refuse anything. The Chinese GOVERNMENT set the requirement. It was the ChiComs who wanted to limit the access to WIFI and the information that could be spread. It was the ChiComs who are limiting what apps can be offered on the Chinese App store. Why do you feel it is necessary to spread untruths?

iPhones will not work on Verizon's network at all. Wrong technology. While T-Mobile does use the same technology, the frequencies of T-Mobile's 3G are not the same, so you are pretty much limited to the 2.5G and 2.75G EDGE speeds... and visual voice mail will not work either.
