Space-age powerboat 'sliced in two' by Japan whalers

SYDNEY — A space-age powerboat sent to harass Japanese whalers was rammed and sliced in two in its very first clash on Wednesday, activists said, dramatically escalating hostilities in icy Antarctic seas.

The futuristic Ady Gil trimaran, which holds the round-the-world record and was enlisted by militant activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for this whaling season, received "catastrophic damage" and was sinking, they said.

All six crew, who earlier hurled stink bombs at the whalers to disrupt their annual hunt, were rescued unharmed by Sea Shepherd's Bob Barker ship. Activists described the attack as unprovoked and said it was captured on film.

"The Shonan Maru No. 2 suddenly started up and deliberately rammed the Ady Gil ripping eight feet (2.4 metres) of the bow of the vessel completely off," a Sea Shepherd statement said.

The Ecoterrorists are lying, they ran in front of the ship and bot hit. The whale populations are growing dramatically thanks to good Japanese management. How much oil they wasting?

From that video it appears that the pirate boat was underway and ran into the forward starboard quarter of the whaler.

Yes, these boats are part of the fleet on the TV show Whale Wars.

The other video gives a different perspective, though.

I watched the video this morning and it was obvious they wanted this to happen and did it on purpose. The video was taken from the Japanese ship, it was clear they put the bow of their boat directly in front of the whaling ship.

Their first claim was their engine died and the Japanese ship ran them down, but the instant the boat was hit they threw it in reverse and backed up. I hate to say it but I could care less if the crew pulled through or not.

Lesson One in Cognitive Dissonance: This is the feeling of uncomfortable tension which comes from holding two completely opposing thoughts in the mind at the same time.

Your premise is wrong. The Japanese are operating on the high seas legally. If you don't want whales killed get the law changed. After the law is changed them the Japanese are illegal. Interfering with legal commerce on the high seas in PIRACY. The Seas Shepherds are pirates and from what I see on their show the “Captain” is a drunken sod who enjoys the company of admiring young women in servitude aboard his rust bucket.

I looked at the other video. It does favor the Greens a bit, but not by much. The Whaling boat was chopping thru the waters while the speed boat was drifting in front of it and got rammed. You can’t expect a Whaling boat of that size to manuvuer away while the the waves were pushing them around. The speed boat should not have parked themselves in front

Reminds me of the 98-pound weakling who teases the big dumb galoot on the playground, counting on the latter’s forebearance to keep from getting his scrawny heinie kicked, then running crying to the teacher when the big guy finally has had enough nd swats him like a gnat.

I agree. No need for whaling. I like Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Society. He had a long running battle against The Sierra Club and he was a baord member.

He said the Sieera Club (SC) had become a (DNC) political group. The SC had been against open borders and uncontrlled immigration in the past. Years ago they were a sane environmentalist group in a good way. They became a DNC, LA Raza, Saudi front group.

In the video linked by AIT, there is a wake behind the pirate boat before the collission, so I’m not so sure it was drifting.

I'll need more evidence than just the video that the Sea Shepherd folks shot.

There's no way from that video to see the relative speeds, movements or distances between the ships.

From watching Whale Wars it's apparent the SS folk know all about the power of video and are careful to film from certain vantage points, so I'll hold off for now on placing blame on the whalers.

Think someone is telling lies about how fast it can/could go under "normal conditions".

Sucker went down fast ~ apparently had no seal-able interior compartments.

That’s gonna put their operations budget back a tad. LOL!

Don't believe it. Why sent a fragile marginally seaworthy raceboat into the Antarctic seas to "harass" (SeaShepherd's term for playing bumper boat) whalers?

It was a verlorn hoop intended to get broken: Now watch those donations roll in.

There are a good number of people who cannot live on your vegetable diets and need a natural diet of whale, seal, dolphin and plenty of fish.

No. I think the enviroweenies placed themselves in harms way in the hope they would stop a ship that takes a mile to stop.

The law of the sea requires, when both ships are powered and underway, that the more maneuverable vessel "git out the way". It's not necessarily a size thing but usually it is.

Powered vessels are supposed to give way to sail powered vessels ~ presumably an aircraft carrier should yield to a sunfish sailboat but they rarely do ~ it's the maneuverability thing.
