Oh, no! Not the dreaded “howitzer cannon” again!

Has this been a recurring recycling issue?

For a few minutes I considered bringing back a case of handheld flares from Vietnam. I thought they would be great on the Fourth of July and New Year. But a 155mm artillery round, now I think that is hubris.

Someone from Fort Lewis must have had their household goods inspected and got told it couldn’t be packed in the shipment.

Hey, at least they were thoughtful and didn’t just throw it in with the comingled trash. Could have ruined a heavy equipment operator’s whole day.

So much for rushing out to buy one.

when i was a 107mm mortar platoon leader at grafenwoehr BRD in ‘76 i had a 108mm round that would not fit down the tube. tried to turn it into eod and they asked if it was defective. i said it wouldn’t fit in the tube. they replied yes but is it defective? they would not take. the ammo point would not take it so we sent with with a batch of ammo for another mortar platoon to use. it could still be getting passed around.

I wonder how long that thing has been kicking around. 155s of one stripe or another have been in the inventory since WWI. Ammo for an old “Long Tom” has got to be a bit unstable by now. The newer stuff should be OK as long as you don't hit it with a hammer or throw it in a fire.

Yes, if your paper work is absolutly, positivly, 100% correct you can draw anything from the ASP. But don’t ever, ever try to turn in anything but spent brass.

When the Field Artillery deposites them, they are rarely recycled!

They should have donated it to MythBusters and see how they recycled it.

I maintain that a motar round that does not fit down the tube is defective. Case closed.

Before I posted this, I looked around for additional sources but couldn't find anything; probably because this event occurred just a few minutes ago.  As time passes some of the local media 'may' pick up the story and add more detail.

I can't imagine why not....that sort of thing is a standard Home Depot stock item, isn't it?
