Citizens of Shanghai are aghast at the collapse of a major new bridge, pictured, which was revealed to be constructed partially out of rubbish instead of concrete.
The bridge, spanning the Wusong River in central Shanghai, was completed in 2009 and replaced a century old bridge with a more modern design.
However, after only a short period in operation the bridge began to collapse, with investigators finding such sturdy construction materials as bags of rubbish, Styrofoam, scrap wood and waste plastic used in the structure in place of reinforced concrete.
However, after only a short period in operation the DEMOCRAT MAJORITY began to collapse, with investigators finding such sturdy construction materials as bags of rubbish, Styrofoam, scrap wood and waste plastic used in the structure in place of ACTUAL IDEAS.
They tried to demolish this building. One half fell over but the other half only lost its lower floors and remained standing at an angle.
American exceptionalism......naa dosen’t exist. We should be more global and less American. Dear Lord, if it wasn’t for the United States what would our world look like? Obama and his cabal are supposed to be really, really smart. Maybe they should step back and retool and accept that we are the only hope for the world and stop running down our culture our history and how we have always seen ourselves. Do we really want to become more like Europe or heaven forbid China?
Thank you dear Lord for showing my ancestors the way to America.
Not so much east v west, but democracy v totalitarianism. In a totalitarian society, everyone has to game the system to make a living, and there is no accountability.
There is truth in what you say grasshopper. Just the other day I was talking to someone about tool quality from many years ago, and the phrase “Made in England” used to be an unimpeachable statement of manufacturing quality. Not so much anymore.
Fat Tony, call your office!
Democrats - unions - communists - pretty much the same on corruption... Wouldn’t want to drive across a bride any of them had built...
Wow. Sounds like Santa Cruz.
Just a little sloppy quality control. Can happen anywhere. Reminds me of the critters we elect for congress.
>>>All joking aside, this shows the deep underlying cultural differences between the occidental and oriental worlds
There is a cultural difference NOW. It was an American Vanderbilt who said “The public be damned”.
China is now where we used to be back in the era when cheap fragile substandard wire was sold to hold up the Brooklyn Bridge and cardboard mortuary shoes were sold to the Union Army infantry. Robber barons whose philosophy is anything we can get away with for a buck no matter who gets hurt.
You saw this in Dickensian England too. It seems to be a necessary and inevitable stage of capitalist growth. Therefore in the LONG run it’s a good thing, but it gets people hurt in the short run.
“Wouldnt want to drive across a bride any of them had built”
“Bride” I will not cross because she would hit me for trying!!!
Bay Bridge steel set to be shipped from China
Michael Cabanatuan, Chronicle Staff Writer

With much fanfare and celebration - by Chinese steelworkers and Caltrans officials alike - the first steel pieces of the new Bay Bridge suspension span were prepared to ship out of Shanghai on Tuesday - more than a year late but in time to meet a Dec. 31 deadline that officials hope will keep construction on schedule for a 2013 opening.

Thanks much for the ping, JACKRUSSELL. Interesting.
Bridge - I’m getting sleepy...
Yes... The key with China is to own the engineering and the QC - you can get good products then (with them doing the manufacturing). Too many turn over engineering or QC along with manufacturing and - well - you get bridges filled with trash!
I second your challenge with the Cline Avenue Bridge over the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal in East Chicago, Indiana.
You do not want a Chinese carpenter picking the studs for your home.
I'm sure their engineers would like better QC but somebody has to do the work and that "somebody" doesn't believe in modern QC and never will.
