That is the case in Texas, if you have a CHL. If you do not, my understanding is that you are not required to inform the officer that you have a firearm in the vehicle.
You are not required, but we were told the officer will likely ask if we have the weapon in the car and he may ask to see it. The former officer teaching the class said the officer may unload it and give you back the gun and loose bullets. He said most officers are "cool" about CHLs, but some resent them.
In Texas, you can carry a gun in your car with no CHL.
