You know what. My best friend in college was the Son of a police chief in central Florida. He had a large collection of guns he had confiscated over the years. He even gave me one.
When I was in grad school one of my buddies and I were out target shooting on his property about 200 yards off the road. He had to park his car near the road. One day he got back and a deputy had stopped, found a Taurus copy of the Beretta 92 and confiscated it. He left a note that he had taken it to make sure no one took it and used it in a crime.
My friend and I both knew the real reason he took it. My buddy went to the sheriff’s office and got it back. A good number of people would have just let him keep it. BTW it wasn’t being stored in the locked evidence room but in the deputy’s car.
So yes, some of them do steal your gun if given half a chance.
