Here in New York City, every white person with a college education talks with the same upper middle class generic newscaster inflection, with the ladies adding Valley speak (even though we are way far from SoCal). Ditto Asians of all social classes.
Blacks, hispanics, Arabs, some Bangladeshi's, to say nothing of lower class whites (including the guys known locally as "guidos") tend to adopt ghetto speak. Kinda funny seeing a guy named Vito Antonelli referring to "his niggahz."
The old New Yawk accent has been dying a slow death, and can now be found in diminishing amounts only on Staten Island and in far flung parts of suburbia.
I still have mine Clemenza! I have passed it to my children who were born in PA. My six year old is very confused.
She has some PA and NY accent combined.
