I use OpenOffice 3.x and it works like a charm.

Though I don't deal with it (I'm a server & network guy), the company I work for has rolled out OpenOffice to about 2600 workstations so far, and it seems to be going well. The company is also looking at moving from Windows 2000 Professional (please don't laugh, it works for us) to Linux for those same workstations.

I am shocked that in 2009, there are still people who haven't heard of "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish", the business plan of Microsoft since time immemorial for crushing its competitors.
I mean, for gawd's sake, it's got ITS OWN WIKIPEDIA PAGE.

I've played with the current OpenOffice 3.1.1 and while it is a good package, it's nowhere as polished as Office 2007 with its highly intuitive "ribbon" interface.

I LOVE Open office! I recommend it to anybody I meet... No reason whatsoever to buy Microsoft office.
I had to chuckle when I went to register it and they asked the question, why did you pick open office... and one of the quick answer choices on the pull down was “because it is not Microsoft”

Don’t worry. Fascism is in full swing nowadays and you guys will be happy to see MS soon fully controlled by the courts and the Justice Department. Damn. I’ll miss these threads.

I have been using Open Office exclusively for one year now.
It “may” be a little slower and it “may” be different in how it operates but the fact that it is free makes it an easy package to accept. Free is always good as long as it is comparable with MS Word.

Welcome to capitalism, Microsoft. Why so serious?

Note to Steve Ballmer:
The GUI O/S and Office Productivity Software money missile is beginning to run out of fuel. Time to come up with a Plan B, and trashing your competition's image just doesn't work any more.

I prefer Google Docs. I find it really convenient, as since it is on the cloud, I can access it anywhere from any computer.

Open Office is certainly worth the money that you pay for it, but there are compatibility issues with “genuine” Microsoft files (specifically, Excel files).
