My wife bought me a hunting rifle for Christmas. Actually, she gave me "permission".( haha) I already have a nice assortment of shotguns and .22's. I'm looking for a drop and stop rifle. One that will drop a deer and stop an "evil-doer". So, what should I get???
The Marlin 1894 lever action chambered in .44 Magnum is an excellent white tail gun in most areas of the US.
If you get a carbine model it will do for home defense. I prefer a Colt 1911 for home defense because a rifle will penetrate interior walls (and in newer homes exterior as well) possible injuring unintended persons.
However if you must have a do it all weapon the 44 Magnum Marlin 1894 lever action carbine will do the job. I recommend that for home defense that you keep it loaded with frangible safety slug ammo.
The comment about anything on two legs might not apply to Grizzly however ;)
I agree with you on this one. The Marlin 30-30 is extremely accurate and fires very fast, and can mount a scope directly in line with the bore. I would also recommend the Marlin .44 magnum lever action.
I was in a rowboat hunting snipe and a ball of socialism came screaming through the front and left me swimming for life. Unfortunatly the weapons were lost.
His budget is $600. He could maybe find a dpms ar10 stripped lower for that.
I do like using a bow for deer hunting also... I use a plain old Recurve 55lb pull bow

For the original poster, what State do you live in? That right there will either allow everything or greatly restrict what you can use for deer hunting. Get the rules of the State down first...
Then, once we know what is allowed, we’d want to consider how often you actually will hunt. I know lots of guys who get a rifle planning to hunt all the time and use it for home defense at the other times, and after one miserable first season in the rain they never go out again. Better to have simply bought a single-shot Rossi for the hunt for $150, and then spent the balance on a nice home-defense weapon.
So, where do you live and how often will you go hunting - really?
M-1 Garand from the civilian marksmanship program. 30-06 has authority enough for everything and an 8 round clip (yes clip) keeps you from Rambo thoughts.

ok, to be specific, my budget is 600$. my main objective is white-tail, zombies are second. I would prefer a rifle/scope combo with easily obtainable ammo.
I guess you could say i’m a bow-hunter that kinda thinks it’s time to get a rifle before the shtf.
While we’re at it, can anyone explain the difference between holographic sites and red dot sites?
Goodness, I wish I had had the forethought to sell all mine,'cause if I had, I would know who had them and could go and kindly request the return of them, since I miss them so much...hint, hint, nudge, nudge, wink, wink..but all of mine, ever last one, except for that old rusty single shot twenty gauge, got blowed up in the air from a tornado this past summer.
I alerted every police department I could about it, just in case some of them fell back to earth, somewhere, but I haven't heard anything and it's been over six months.
But, just in case one of them turns up, I'm continuing to buy ammunition for them.
Just in case, you know?
Actually I believe the Italian made Carcano rifle Lee Harvey Oswald was shooting was chambered for 6.5X52 MM, not a 7 MM. The Italians did make a few rifles, the 1938 model, that fired a 7.35X51 MM round but I believe Oswald was using the more plentiful Model 91, chambered, as I said, in 6.5X52 MM.

It’s good that you at least got to sell them. I lost all mine in a tragic boating accident. Ammo and all. So sad.

It’s hard to beat the .30-06 for versatility in North America. Do you want a bolt action or a semi-auotmatic? Browning and Remington make excellent examples of both. 7mm Magnum will be better for long shots, although you’ll get more recoil and damage more meat.
If $900.00 or $1000.00 for a rifle is too much, the Howa 1500 Lightning is an excellent bolt action.
SPEND MONEY ON THE SCOPE, RINGS, AND MOUNT.
I can’t tell you how many magnificently accurate rifles I’ve seen ruined because the owner had to skimp and throw a cheap scope on it. Nikon, Leupold, or better.
Lever gun in .357 magnum ... some even allow you to shoot .38 special which is cheaper than .357 mag so you can practice lots.

Okay, I just read your $600 comment. Savage and Howa are the choices, still .30-06 or 7mm Magnum. Personally, I find the Savage rifles a little too heavy. If you can drive a quad up to your stand, this won’t bother you and they make excellent rifles.
SPEND MONEY ON THE RINGS, MOUNT, AND SCOPE.
