I recently met Steve Howe at a M&G after the Yes/Asia show in Kansas City. The man was quite gracious, and even after performing 2 sets (both with Asia and Yes) in stifling heat (synths kept dying), he was pleasant and attentive to us. I will say this: Before the band (Yes) came out, we were informed not to attempt to shake Steve's hand: He stopped shaking hands after getting his right hand crushed by an over-eager fan. And frankly, he does look a bit frail.

But he's got a great sense of humor, and there's good reason that he was the first member of Guitar Player Magazine's "Gallery of Greats!"

I’ve seen Phil Keaggy a few times, really fun in concert. Amazing guitar, impromptu songs, and jamming with his band.

Another favorite is Alex Lifeson of Rush. Not as much fun in concert as the songs are pretty much what you get on the album - but that is amazing in it’s own way.

I did a google search and found the Time Mag photo essay...

“Best Electric Guitarists of All Time?” I don’t think so... However, it could very well be a list of the “Most Influential Electric Guitarists.”

Here’s the list from Time:

1) Jimi Hendrix
2)Slash
3) B.B. King
4) Keith Richards
5) Eric Clapton
6) Jimmy Page
7) Chuck Berry
8) Les Paul
9) Yngwie Malmsteen
10) Prince
11) Johnny Ramone

In a couple of these cases, it seems that the author of the list was doing some serious drugs, or just doesn’t know the history of the style of music, but most on this list were seriously influential.

Still, there’s a terrific blog where someone rips this list with a bunch of other guitarists that would fit the bill “better” for the “best” list, and in some cases, even more influential...

I don't know how Jeff Beck could be left off this list....

Yngwie can shred, but I'm partial to Stanley Jordan. Seen him twice in concert - simply amazing!

That is good stuff.

I believe that many years ago Steve Howe was a FReeper.

Paul Gilbert

Also, a list of the top ten lectric guitar players of all time that lists BB King and Prince, and does not list Eddie Van Halen or Ted Nugent, is a crummy list.

I have played guitar for 35 years and I can pretty much play anything I hear. But to this day, I still can't play the part in "Starship Trooper" where Steve Howe does the finger-picking - "Disillusion"? I can listen to that over and over again. His style of playing is very underrated.

I read an interview with Eddie Van Halen and he even said that he wished he could play classical guitar like Carlos Montoya - Steve Howe is as good a classical player as anyone. Steve Howe is one of the greats - absolutely.

I agree. Beck has an inimitable style - when you hear him play you KNOW it's Jeff Beck.

It's Time magazine. What do you expect?

Impressive, but did he actually build his own instrument?

Malmsteen is a bore. He know every scale and ever mode in every key and can play it a million miles an hour..Problem he says nothing in his playing.
Neat trick but it gets real boring real fast.

Then you'll REALLY like this video. One man, one guitar (well, to start with - then TWO physically different guitars), playing lead, rhythm AND bass lines simultaneously. Syncopated against each other, no less! Simply scary what he can do.

Any list that does not put Jordan in the top 10 is simply a list that is incomplete, or compiled in ignorance... That video of "Willow" should be enough to earn him a top 10 spot!

Paul Gilbert - GREAT guitarist. Love the intro to "Green tinted Sixties Mind". He and Billy Sheenhan tore it up!

I agree - Eddie & Ted left off of the list? As I said in a previous post - it's Time magazine. They probably left Ted Nugent out because of his outspoken conservatism.

Slash as #2 makes it a total joke. Half the kids in NY City play just like that, most better . Bar band talent at best.

Now ya talking ..Beck is a guitar players player.
He says more in one note than most do in their whole career. .
