Suggestions please. I will soon buy a rife (Vanity)

Posted on 12/26/2009 9:43:36 AM PST by wintertime

I will soon purchase a rife.

Purpose: Protection in the very unlikely event of civil unrest.

I am a woman in my early sixties who is fit and healthy but I do not have a lot of upper body strength.

Before purchasing a rife, I would appreciate any comments Freepers might have regarding the suitability of the rife I have chosen in regards to the purpose and my physical strength.

At the moment I am considering buying a DPMS Panther 5.56 NATO Sportical AR 15. This rife seemed to be the easiest for me to handle.

By the way, I grateful for the comments of the Freepers before I purchased a handgun. Because of your very helpful suggestions I bought one that was perfect for me, my abilities, and the purpose.

What will a rife do for you? I heard those rifes don’t shoot to straight.

I’m rife with confusion.

Do you mean a rifle? If so, yes, get one. Equally important for everyday protection, in my VERY humble opinion, is a dog. And one big enough to do damage AND scare the crap out of anyone that comes to your home.

Go to the shelter. You will not be disappointed if you get one.

12 gauge shotgun, 00 buck Shot, you only need to aim close. Most people will run scared as soon as you pump it the first time.

A rifle is for longer ranges like 25-500 yards if you just want protection from unrest- I would strongly recommend a Mossberg .410 gauge home defender shotgun with buckshot. It is easy for a woman to handle and is highly effective from 1-25 meters.

Maybe she plans to blind them to death with a Rife light.

Why would you want a rifle? For defense purposes, a shotgun will serve you much better. You can use it for hunting at a short distance by loading it with a slug, and it’s wonderful for personal defense on your property. A rifle demands great accuracy and has a very long range. It is not a good defense weapon unless you live in the middle of nowhere and are concerned about picking off intruders 3/4 of a mile away. Use it on your own suburban location and you’ll take out the kids in the next six houses.

A lot would depend on your experience with rifles, and your home set-up.

If your concern is someone breaking in and threatening you or killing you, then it depends on if you want to go looking for them, or wait for them to come to you.

If you go looking for them (which I don’t advise), then something that can get around a corner easily is needed. Short rifle, no longer than a standard 30-30. I actually like the Ruger 10/22. Yes, it only shoots a .22 - but it is light and easy to practice with, and even a .22 fired in the chest will make most non-drugged up men eager to leave. The one time I used a gun for self-defense, it was a .22 pistol. Six shots, and there were 8 of them, but I wasn’t going to miss and no one wanted to be first!

I use a Marlin .44 Magnum rifle, but it is heavier and takes more effort to put a round in the chamber. It also sounds kind of like a shotgun, which would deter most would be robbers/killers.

If you are willing to wait for them to come to you, then a 20 gauge semi-auto shotgun might make sense. Or a 30-30. Although the 44 Mag rifle doesn’t kick very hard, holds 10 rounds and has plenty of punch for a man <15 feet away.

If you are looking to shoot before they come in the house...get a good lawyer first.

Varmint rifle, 223 caliber. Cheap ammo, higher(not highest) velocity, nice weight barrel for standing unsupported shooting. Accurate at distant targets.

20 gage pump, as in a Maverick88 or Remington version. If you must have a first rifle, buy a 1022 .22 caliber and add a nice scope for head shots at 100 yards.
