Recent Terror Attacks Keep Health Care Bill Passage Out of News Headlines: New Wag the Dog Strategy

Posted on 12/26/2009 7:41:32 AM PST by jq2

I know FR isn’t a place for conspiracy theories, just thought I’d post this new one up to get some reactions from the FR crowd:

“Strange Coincidence: Recent terror attacks have kept the House and Senate health care bill passage out of major news headlines.

Timeline #1:
- Nov 5th Fort Hood Shooting
- Nov 6th Orlando Shooting Spree
- Nov 7th House Passes Health Care Bill
News outlets focus on terror attacks. American public follows terror attack news. Health care bill passing House moved off front page headlines

Timeline #2:
- December 24th Senate Passes Health Care Bill Christmas Eve
- December 25th Failed Terrorist Attack on Northwest Airlines Flight Christmas Day
News outlets focus on terror attacks. American public follows terror attack news. Health care bill passing Senate moved off front page headlines

Timeline #3:
- Date TBD
- President signs the final health care bill.

It’s much cheaper to bride a terrorist than a $100 million Senator”

The terror attacks are not a coordinated Wag the Dog plan and the government isn’t capable of distracting the American public with terrorist events. Nonetheless, I would think the Senate passing the health care bill is newsworthy and should make the headlines.
Crazy conspiracy theories . . .

You are assuming that the American people are so stupid and so easily distracted that terror attacks cause them to not realize what is going on in Washington.

The MSM and the Democrats have made it impossible to understand what is actually included in “health care reform”. They have consistently lied about the contents of these proposed laws. Despite this, informed people have strongly opposed these laws.
The MSM does not need terror events to cover up what is going on. They will do so even if there is no other news that day.
The terror events and the “health care reform” issues are related in that they are both symptoms of the contempt the MSM and the politicians have for the good people of America. They are willfully destroying the best health care system in the history of the world and they are allowing Soldiers of Allah to kill Americans.

Yes, I doubt if the healthcare bill was not passed that the White House would have had their media pals make a big deal out of the act of terror. Obama would not have wanted the “need” for government healthcare to be off the front pages.

Certain types of news stories do crowd out other news stories. For example, the Tiger Woods story crowded out the cop-killer pardoned by Gov Huckabee story, which crowded out the Balloon Boy story. That goes on all the time. But staging this attempted terrorist act to crowd out healthcare bill stories would be wasteful for several reasons.

First, it’s a Christmas weekend already being frazzled by bad weather in the Midwest. People already are distracted.

Two, when Congress comes back in early January, the big push will be on merging the two different healthcare bills. The story is going to be back in the news.

Three, even now, during the recess, Nelson, Lincoln, Landrieu, and others are in the press detailing what they will or will not accept in a modified bill. So really, the story is still in the news.

I thought terrorists were going for the 40 virgins, not marriage.... But, some might want to marry a $100M Senator...like Lindsey....

Apologies, this should have had a barf alert on it. This is just another conspiracy theory out there. That's why it's posted in the official FR "Conspiracy (General/Chat)" section.

Yes, it has been amazingly fortuitous timing, indeed.

I've lived too long to believe it is coincidence.

Interesting points. You’re says that crowding out major news stories does work? Not sure of the whole conspiracy thing though.

Well, story crowd-out really only works for certain types of stories, and it's purely a herd mentality thing. I doubt there's any intention on the part of the media; it's just the way they stampede.

Remember when we had 6 months of saturation coverage of Rep Gary Condit over the Chandra Levy disappearance? It was as if the government's business couldn't be conducted unless Chandra Levy was found, dead or alive. Then 9/11 happened. The media herd abandoned Condit. We didn't hear about Levy again until her bones were found in a DC park a year or so later.

PS: I don't believe in any wag-the-dog conspiracy over this terrorist attack.
