Avatar: Cameron's Contradictions Loom Large

Filmmaker James Cameron is famous for blockbusters like Titanic and The Terminator. His latest movie, Avatar, just opened after a massive media blitz during which Cameron himself hit the talk show circuit, along with his on-screen stars. Since the high-tech 3-D film may have cost $300 million to make, Cameron is highly motivated to promote the film so as to recover the costs and make a profit. And herein lies the contradiction between the film's story and the filmmaker's own life.

-- snip --

Cameron's native Canada is one of Day's supplanting societies, just like the United States and Australia. Cameron is in every way the product of what his ideology condemns. He has no desire to surrender his mansions and jet-setting parties to live in a rainforest with half-clad tribesmen. Indeed, at age 55, he would probably be dead by now in such an environment. And as he markets Avatar around the world, ticket sales will track income, and his profits will come from those nations and enclaves that are the legacy of imperialism. So between "us" and "them," Cameron has done in his real life what any sane person would do: He has chosen "us."

Just does not seem like an interesting movie. Titanic was a phenominal movie that he won’t be able to repeat with any other movie he makes...it is a once in a lifetime movie. I will not see this movie but I encourage EVERYONE to attend “The Blind Side” by Sandra Bullock. I am telling you it is the best movie of the year.

...we must move beyond the notion that most liberals are idiots who do not know any better.

Especially those in leadership positions. Their minions are often, though intelligent, clueless to the true power-grabbing end game, motivating primarily on their 'fairness' emotions.

Avatar was Dances with Wolves (soldier goes native after banging a hot tribal chick) and Pocahontas (the wise talking tree) meet Apocalypse Now and Platoon.

The story wasn't that good. I liked Titanic. I had an interest in the characters. This just seemed to forced.

The Marine officer reminded me of a mix between Col. Nathan Jessup

Col. Nathan R. Jessup Pictures, Images and Photos

and Staff Sergeant Barnes (gee, including the scar)

had the "Marines are stupid" , scientist are smart and cool.

The obligatory dialogue that had “pre-emptive” war and a decision to “fight terror with terror.” the “daisy-cutter” , "Kill them for what lies beneath them". "Can't throw a rag without hitting something holy"....of course they were sent back to the "dead planet that they killed" or whatever.

The only thing missing was a screen shot indicating that if only Bush had signed the Kyoto Treaty the earth would have been saved .

I'll never get those 9 hours that I had to sit and watch the movie... but it only felt like 5 minutes.... underwater.

I agree about much of their “leadership”, but most of the quisling liberal foot troops are idiots and don’t know the damage they are doing.

Cameron has admitted to the leftist themes. That doesn’t mean it is going to be a bad movie, I can take some slanting, although it sounds like it slants really hard.

I wish the story could be as new and as fresh as what the movie seems to be visually.

Freegards, merry Christmas

Yes, with my own eyes, lots of them.

Are you sure you watched the right movie?

You’re right — the Marine officer was a clone of Sergeant Barnes, scars and all. It was like deja vu.

BTW, I’ll bet that back in the day there were people who insisted that Platoon was “just a war movie”.

Someone on another thread pointed out that the weaselly yuppie corporate guy in Avatar was a lot like the one in Alien (played by Paul Riser). I thought that was a good point. OTOH weaselly corporate guys are such a stock character in Hollywood that it might not mean much.

Exactly. "Solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short" is for thee, not for me.

I thought the movie fell short. It was a bit too long and the “evil military commander” was too over the top and not at all realistic. That said, I didn’t see any reason to feel like my values were being put on trial. Though a visually stunning film, I found it mostly a bore.

it was unique. felt like walking on an alien world. I don’t question the over the top statement at all.
