Can Somebody Please Explain The Obamacare Bill To Me?
Myself

Posted on 12/24/2009 2:39:46 AM PST by CondoleezzaProtege

Hi Freepers, I realize that only a few people are awake, but I am having trouble getting a clear, cliff-notes version explanation of the bill the Senate is about to vote on tomorrow. All I know for sure is that if Pelosi, Reid, and Obama are behind it--it must be very, very bad. It's finally sinking in that something "big" is happening. Up until now, I've avoided really examining the issue and its implications for fear of getting too upset.

I've listened to coverage on every news network and end up being more confused. I realize that it may be virtually impossible to sum up thousands of pages, but if somebody can list the basic things the bill will or will not accomplish, that would be great. I would also like to know:

1) How drastically did Joe Lieberman's provisions alter the bill? What is the difference between a public option and healthcare "exchanges?"

2) What exactly will be the disastrous consequences of this bill for hospital patients? for people diagnosed with long term and potentially fatal diseases?

3) Will any of the damage be reversible with the next Republican administration/Republican majority?

4) Is there ANYTHING the *LEAST* bit positive about this bill?

5) Is there any country's current healthcare system we can compare the model in Congress' proposal to?

Everyone's thoughts and contributions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

~ CP

If I understand this from the health industry perspective, I expect a large protion of MD’s and/or Physician groups to terminate their practices due to blatantly low rates of reimbursemnts, high office/practice overhead, major payroll tax/benefit increases and hugh increases in patient load.

When it becomes apparent that abortion is mandatory, the Catholic Hospitals in the USA will close down for cause.

The lucky ones (MD’s and Practices) will lease cruise ships and re-locate 15 miles off shore for cash only. The definitive business model for 2010 and beyond will be off shore health care transportation services.

Just some thoughts for ya

It’s not about health care. It’s about mandatory health insurance run by the government. The details you can get from one of the .gov websites, but it’s around 2,000 pages and more than likely in language not meant for the average citizen to understand, and that’ why most of our esteemed politicians haven’t bothered to read it.

Elections will now allow the prisoners to choose who will be their warden and who will be the guards.

How is anything in it positive, when you just lost your freedom, and your life or life expectancy isn’t up to you and your doctor anymore, it’s up to the tyranny of government who is so partisan, they can’t even be respectful to the electorate..

I’m confused by the specifics also, was hopeing for a list on this thread of what we do know about it, instead we are getting some emotional rants. A couple things I beleive would be on such a list:

1) 10% tax on tanning salons
2) cost for family of 4 making 88.2k/yr for forced deathcare 15k.
3) Eventual higher ins. premium if you are a gun owner.
4) Eventual higher ins. premium if you are overweight.
5) Higher ins. premium if you are married.
6) part of your premiums will be used for other peoples abortions.

For me, personally, I will turn 65 in February and enter the Medicare maze. My coverage will decrease and my premiums will increase. Simple as that...

If this bill extends coverage to even 20,000,000 currently uninsured it will create a backlog for those seeking treatment from doctors or hospitals. Instead of waiting two weeks for an appointment it will be more like two months or more.

This bill will not reform the current system, it will destroy it.

Here's an excerpt from an e-mail I received from my state Senator this morning:

Right now, we are focused on reforming health care, which is just one of the many challenges facing our nation. Americans want and deserve access to quality and affordable care. But at the same time, Americans are growing tired of what has become the typical Washington response to our nation's problems: grow government and spend more money.

The latest version of the Senate bill does just that while leaving 23 million of America's uninsured without insurance. The bill increases taxes by $518 billion, cuts Medicare by $470 billion, and imposes an unfunded mandate on Florida's Medicaid system resulting in $3.5 billion in additional state spending on Medicaid.

In recent weeks, I have had an ongoing dialogue with Floridians by phone, personal meetings and email to learn about your concerns on health care. Overwhelmingly, the consensus is that the current proposal will increase health care costs and hurt the quality of care.

I had looked forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and had hoped they would share my urgency in putting aside the partisan rancor, solving problems, and doing what's right for our nation. I had remained hopeful that we could reach consensus on a plan that would reduce costs and increase access to health care while protecting the quality of care for all Americans. It could have been done. Instead, this week in Congress we're creating a new trillion dollar entitlement program.

I regret that I will not be able to support the bill pending in the Senate.

This thing they are calling healthcare reform is nothing but the fedgov take over of the medical industry. Look at what they have done to the banks and the auto industry. Only this is very different. The senate/house bill will give feds the power to determine what medical procedures they will pay for and what they won’t. And don’t think for a minute that they won’t politicize this. Look at how this admin treated the auto dealers. In England, a pregnant woman had to wait 11 months to see a doctor for prenatal care. All the efficiency of the post office with all the compassion of the irs.

There is no “Bill”- there is 2700 pages of gibberish. The sloppy ingredients of an unsavory sausage yet to be packed into a casing with the final help of congress.

What they voted on was a concept- govt control of healthcare as a “right” and an entitlement- “Healthcare” to be defined by the guarantor. The Government.

“You know, sometimes “someone” ought to say, you need to just take a pain pill.

You do not need it explained to you at all!!! STOP ASKING!

Just know that harry reid (and his political god - the all wonderful, chill-giver, the great islamic muslim-in-chief) has told you that you will greet the new health care bill with "joy and happiness".

That should be enough for anyone!

Now shut up and drink the nice koolaide!

1) It's not about health care, it's about power.

EXACTLY! It has NOTHING to do with *your health* and EVERYTHING to do with their power/control over YOU!

Hi Russ, thanks for your description of the bill and its implications in real-life terms. Do you believe if any of the damage this monstrosity will cause can be reversible in a future Republican administration/Republican congress?
