Vanity, Freeper Help Needed to Identify Tracks in Snow
N/A | N/A | N/A

Posted on 12/20/2009 8:38:41 PM PST by PA Engineer

Need help identifying the following snow tracks:

This is the third time I have found some strange animal tracks on my land. I live in western pa, 25 miles from Pittsburgh in the land of murrymom. The area is rural on the edge of suburban development. These tracks I photographed (iPhone) while snow blowing.

The gate is 6 to 8 feet and the single track may be a double paw print. The single track is larger than my hand. The tracks entered my property near a wood pile (breaking a five wire electric fence) and traveled over two hundred feet down my driveway (19 degree grade). The tracks changed direction and followed a set of dear tracks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Let’s hope the county high school isn’t Beaver Central.

Actually, there are two. Western Beaver and Big Beaver. No I'm not kidding.

LOL, Now what's the liquor store named?

Looks like a mountain lion (puma;cougar). They’re very good at keeping out of sight but let snow fall and their tracks show up.

We lived in a rural/suburban boundary area outside Portland, Oregon, in 1969. The ground around our home was tilled, smoothed, and grass seed planted. We watered before retiring for the night, and had the surprise of our lives the next morning. Mountain lion tracks around the outside of the house - we’d slept that night with the windows all open, too!

The area teemed with deer, and where there are deer, mountain lions are not far behind.

I’m with The Cajun here, and remember to look up. If it is a Cougar they like to climb trees. If it is hungry enough to follow a deer, they will not hesitate to go after a human. I have never wrestled one before, but I do know a 5 month old tiger cub is strong enough to nearly overpower a grown man.(me)

Probably nothing, but three pieces of advice.

Camera trap.

Big gun.

Packed suitcase.

If it gets any weirder, tell these folks:

The nobel prize winning climate expert Al Gore has determined that these are simply patches of snow that have melted due to global warming.

Maybe it’s a “sign” to get a bigger gun.

I sure can’t tell from the limited detail of those pics.

Considering the gate, my guess is you’ve got some small creature jumping through the snow. I suspect a rabbit, but it could be some other small animal.

Now, if I’m wrong, and you have a creature on your property that has an 8 foot gate, you need not worry what it is, you need to run for your life!! ;>)

You might want to check the area of the broken fence for hair/fur. Show those pics to your local game warden, he/she would likely know what it is. Someone from a hunting club in your area may also have some ideas.

Let us know if it turns out to be a creature from an UFO and you get probed. ;>)

Thanks for the advice. Will have the binoculars, camera and 12 gauge with me. We are heavily wooded and will be cautious.

LOL sorta. I was going to go with hollow point rifled slugs. I think I will go instead with the 00 buck. Will take the 45 also.

Pennsylvania rocky mountain elk. They travel this time of year looking for grasses.

You are on the edge of their range and the tip off is the broken fence. These things are big and a fence won't slow them down, let alone stop them.

The way the snow is kicked up indicates the direction of travel.

19 degree grade? In snow country?

I don't think so. That's 34%!

Hope you have a helicopter!
