Word to the wise: do NOT stick your hand down the shute of a snowblower to clear an ice jam if the auger is still spinning. I let go of the hand control and thought the auger has stopped. Three broken fingers and two to-the-bone lacerations on my middle finger on my right hand have taught me this lesson today. The ER nurses and docs were very impressed. No work, no driving, great pain meds, lots of antibiotics, and seeing a hand surgeon tomorrow. Dumb, dumb, dumb...
Hey, we all have our moments. I’ll never forget attempting to change out an outlet. Did I shut the electric off? Nope. I didn’t do THAT again!
That's the best description I've heard to describe it.
I live in the city, but had my accident about 50 miles out in the country. I figured I was lucky, country doctors have a lot more experience sewing fingers back on.
I was also lucky it didn't come clean off and land in the dirt. It was hanging on one side and one of the guys there was a medic with his kit,so he had it wrapped in gauze before it started bleeding out. No infection.
Good grief - I would show the snow blower guy to my 79 year old mother and not expect her to do anything except laugh. There's a lot of freaking (pardon my language) prudes around here.
I do apologize for that nasty remark...forgive me, I am ashamed..GG
What nasty remark? My wife and kids laughed out loud. Anybody who can bring some humor into the situation is welcomed in my book. No forgiveness needed - Merry Christmas.
Maybe its the drugs, honey.
I really hope you're doing well.
When my husband and I first got our farm, (we were dumb city folks) but fast learners...I was scared to death to drive the big tractor and when we were putting in a hundred or so fence posts I lined up the PTO and kept it going straight in while hubby drove the tractor...After the second day he yelled damn it you better learn to drive this tractor I'll take care of the augur...I guess I made him nervous...
We found out a couple of years later that we gave some of the neighbors some of their biggest laughs...Like me riding an old dump rake and him pulling it with the tractor and the idiot kept making sharp turns and the tongue of the dump rake keep getting caught on the tractor and almost dumping me in the field. He didn't know his wife could cuss as good as I did...
That antique now sits on my daughters property and she planted flowers all around it. It was old when we bought it and he passed away 20 years ago and I sold the farm..
We raised Angora Goats and had 1 ewe, lots of bantam, geese, turkeys chickens also raised ringneck phesants and beautiful chinese red golden phesants...and a pack of dogs got into our rabbits and killed them all...There was one nasty old rooster that use to attack you from behind and finally one day he nailed hubby who promptly chopped off his head after catching him with a large net.. Farming, the most dangerous profession second only to the flight deck of an air craft carrier...Hope you do well in your healing, being an old nurse also, it takes time...
The freeper with the advice about WD 40 was a great piece of information...God Bless and Merry Christmas to you and yours......
Ouch! We don’t got no snowblowers here on Humboldt Bay but I have a 8HP garden shredder that would like to do far worse to me if I let it...
Went to your link and had to put it in my favorites, too much for one sitting.....thanks
Q: How does a man make a snowblower?
A: Take away her dishtowel and hand her a shovel.
Gives new understanding to the title of the thread.
Nevermind.
I’ll shut up now.
I’m good, Mrs EP. The pain meds are starting to wear off, so I’ll pop a few more percocets and go to bed - in this case the recliner. Got to keep my hand elevated somehow, so we’ll see what happens. Thanks for the thoughts. They and the prayers are much appreciated.
All -
I appreciate the thoughts and prayers of everyone here. If you think of it, pray for my wife and three daughters. I’m a real pain in the petunia when I can’t go to work, drive, or do other basic functions like tie my shoes or put a shirt on. Not looking forward to the next few weeks cooped up in the house. Patience, patience, patience...

Good grief!!! Prayers for a speedy recovery. Goes without saying that you are very fortunate despite the injuries you did get from it. God bless.
I don’t have a snow blower either. Walkway and driveway have too many big rocks. Biggest snowfall this year was 46 inches. Reports from Washington, D.C. seem lame to us in snow country! Tonight is warm, only 35F right now and no wind!
That’s a real good one, but you have to watch where you say it. LOL
Also, wear gloves if you change the heating element in your dryer. Those baffles are sharp!
Yes LucyJo, I am blessed that I did not lose any fingers. It happened in a split second. I had a neighbor who saw me and immediately took me to the ER. My wife and our good friend fom church came up right away. Two young ladies at church took care of our three daughters. Another neighbor took care of my snowblower. Folks from church want to bring a meal tonight after my appointment at the hand doc. I have more folks praying for me than I probably realize. We are very blessed indeed. Thanks for your prayers as well.
you bought it, all right.
Get well.
I was born and raised in snow country. We escaped as soon as we could.
