I really enjoyed the responses from last week's "What Are Your Favorite Movies Made Before 1950?" thread (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2406295/posts).
So here's another movie topic - favorite foreign language films of any era. (Hey, we need a pleasant distraction from the debacle going on in DC!)
If you know the date or even decade of the film and the language, please include it.
Thank you and enjoy!
I like to watch films in German. If anyone can recommend German language film(s) to me, I’d appreciate it.
I have watched and thoroughly enjoyed “Das Boot” and “Schultze Gets the Blues.”
Any other German language films out there and rentable? When I ask at Blockbuster they just say umm, I don’t know.
Big Deal on Madonna Street - Italian - takeoff on Rififi
Let me add German films WITHOUT NUDITY, as in PG sort of rated? Those Europeans always seem to be strippin’ down...
“Riget” (1994) - Danish
I second your motion, on both counts. Lives of Others was phenomenal. I saw Moliere (made in 2006 or 2007) a few months ago. It didn’t receive the critical acclaim - probably because it’s a comedy/drama. But, it was quite entertaining, as is anything that starring Laura Morante.
3 is Seven Samurai
Rocky
#3 Seven Samuri-duh lol
"Father Anatoli (portrayed by former Russian rock star Pyotr Mamonov) lives a hermitlike existence in a remote Russian Orthodox monastery, where he's visited by people who believe he has the power to heal, see the future and exorcise demons. But Anatoli's odd behavior confuses his fellow monks, who are unaware that he's tortured by a past sin and considers himself an unworthy fraud. Pavel Lungin directed this poignant parable.
Yes two of my favorites too.
Also, Seven Samurai -Japanese 1954
Run, Lola, Run. Excellent German film
Those are going to be some slim pickens. It's seems like all the better European films have at least some skin in them.
Stalingrad.
you can dl it.
Sophie Scholl and Rosenstrasse do not have violence or nudity. They’re just gripping human dramas, both based on true stories and set during WWII.
Added to my netflix queue...

Yes, even the kids’ shows I rented from Goethe Institute had the joyful host sliding (side view) into the tub, taking off his clothes (butt only) for a swim, changing clothes. . . my kids are like, what is it about German people?
So if anyone has any German films without buck nekkid Germans in them, do tell. My kids watch with me, and we don’t go there.
"Hero?" With Jet Li? Such a GORGEOUS movie. Wow. Pure eye-candy.
