I’ll take the officer’s word on it

Next time you are called to jury duty , please tell the judge you are a cop groupie so you can be excused and an American citizen can have a fair trial .

I wasn't there, the media wasn't there, no cameras or objective evidence is available to evaluate the veracity of the officer's statement.

Both parties have a vested interest in “their version” and both parties more than likely perceived the situation to be just as they described.

When everyone thinks Pug, they think, short, fat, lazy, but
the dog appears to be a Puggle, which while having Pug tendencies, can be more agile, leaner, and larger (heightwise) than a Pug.

Could the dog have given the appearance of being vicious? I'm sure. I've been in contact with Jack Russell Terriers who have really made a nasty bite wound or two. I would never shoot a dog, but I rarely have to worry about dogs being sicced on me either. That being said, there is rarely a situation in which it is necessary to shoot a dog, in my opinion. It is an unfortunate fact of life, though, that those who live outside the constraints of the law do often train their dogs to be vicious. (At which point, I support rehabbing the dogs, but euthanizing the owners.)

Of course, I also do not have a fear of dogs, either. Personally, I'm of the opinion that if you are afraid of dogs, you shouldn't be permitted to be a police officer. That fear can be debilitating, especially considering just how many people own dogs. I had an officer unbuckle his holster and put his hand on his gun because my basenji mix in the backseat was barking and sounded fierce. She would never hurt a fly, but her bark is quite intimidating. I called and spoke to his superior, since I felt as though if he were that frightened, the least he could have done was asked about Daphne. For future reference, I am an attorney with the Department Public Advocacy (Public Defender's office), and do primarily appeals. When I started out, I distrusted all police officers, but as I've matured, I realize that police officers have no higher propensity for being dishonest than those I represent. I am no more deluded into believing that every client whose appeal I handle is actually innocent than I am in believing that every cop planted evidence in every case I've come across. Usually the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

When you have 30 years as trial lawyer , try to remember how silly you looked throwing you public defender credentials around .

I was merely stating that I have experience in this arena, however, obviously, you are too emotionally invested to have a rational discussion. I am sorry that is the case.

Have a nice weekend. I’m off to make phone calls to the Senate, futile as it may be.

Man, cops love shooting dogs. I’m glad I live where there are few criminals and few cops.

Chet:

This is just great. You take a poorly written article, and snip it so it is even worse. An officer answering a call in dark of night, shoots a dog running toward him. So? So, it MIGHT have been an individual who was foolish, stupid, fearful, or trigger happy. MIGHT have been. unless we were there, we cannot know. We probably wouldn't know even if we had been there.

But, instead of trying to understand, or, at worst, blaming an individual; we are treated to unthinking hatred and bigotry toward a whole class of people; police officers.

They sure like that stuff.
Nailing a dog perhaps does not involve the paperwork as from shooting a person, but gives them a rush for shooting something, and is therefore a safe outlet?
Some cops just want to shoot something!
It really seems lately to be some badge of honor for cops when they kill family dogs. I bet they’re yucking it up bigtime behind the scenes about this. Disgraceful.
Do they get merit badges for shooting family pets now?
They roll out for child endangerment but pets be damned!
The J B goons may as well put me down too if it happen at my house.
I wouldn’t take a cops word on absolutely nothing!!!
Thought this might rate a “I’m going to kick your ass and get away with it” graphic. Or perhaps some Freeper could come up with an “I’m here to shoot your dog” version.
Don’t take the “officers” word for it. “Officers” just love to use their little bang-bangs to kill things they know they can get away with killing.
I’ll take it that the “officer” is a lying sack of crap.
Cops are the second most dangerous group of people in this country.
...free range time on Long Island!
Welcome to the Law Enforcement Hush Puppy Hall of Fame!!
With bonus points for killing a dog under 20 pounds!!
Did the cop wet his panties when a 20lb. dawg “attacked” him?!
What A Man!!!...
This act of terror will come back to bite the police at some point as it is now a real joke to them.
Pathetic cop
One day, I expect to see revenge killings over pet murders. Oh, some will condemn this as an overreaction but when you receive no justice, what are you left with? Especially when so many cops think the badge empowers them to bully a formerly free people and shoot humans and animal companions with impunity.
I fully expect someone’s guinea pig to be stomped to death by some human pig in the near-future. “I was afear’d o’ my life!”
This Moron shot it at close range,,,
The Idiot had to know it was a little dawg to have hit it,,,
No way this cop thought it was a pit...
Utterly and absolutely bush league. The officers were clearly mediocre policemen and even more mediocre human beings.
Man, cops love shooting dogs.
Imagining the worst motivations of people in uniform who are trying to hold back the hordes of Barbarians on both sides of our gates. Do you "support our Troops" by doing the same to them?
No doubt, there are people of various degrees of "badness" in the police. It is a very bad thing that this is so. The only way to make this situation better, is to concentrate our anger against the ones who deserve it, not against ALL.
Don't imagine that ALL of "the Troops" are angels, either. There are fools, thieves, liars; and rapists and murderers, too. Not very many, but any is too many. The leftist radicals imagine/pretend that the majority are bad. Should we do the same regarding the police?
No. We should be ashamed of our irrational bigotry.

Any cop shooting one of my dogs has made a life decision. A very, very poor life decision.

Look at your post,,,

This Moron shot it at close range,,,

Well, I was trying to make a point by being sarcastic.

I have the Godzilla of the Papillon breed. He stopped at 20 pounds and he's all muscle.

What A Man!!!...

I think the cop was a chick........which is yet another problem.

Having said that, almost any dude in a cop suit would have done the same thing.

Apparently, that is what they do.

Neither.

It’s a neighborhood, not a Free Fire Zone. They seem to have tighter RoE in Afghanistan than Anytown, USA.

Some of these dumbasses watch too many movies.

I wholly support our military troops and wish the swift death of any enemy that may oppose them, especially radical Islamists!

Your post gets to the root of the very problem this story illustrates. You seem to equate our wonderful American Military with our local police departments across our country. In totalitarian or authoritarian states that is most often the case. In America, our military is specifically denied any involvement in civilian lives unless a state of emergency is declared.

The development of SWAT teams in the 1970's within large metropolitan police forces in response to leftist terrorists, although necessary, started a dangerous trend. Federal government surplus items and funding in the 1980's further broadened the inception of paramilitary police units and eventual acceptance of a paramilitary mentality within police departments across the country.

Now most police departments wear black or subdued militaristic uniforms with baseball caps and patches almost identical to various military uniforms. Paramilitary Police forces have become a symbol of the pervasive governmental intrusion in our everyday lives.

"Warrior Cops: The Ominous Growth of Para-militarism in American Police Departments by Diane Cecilia Weber", published by the Cato Institute stated it this way:

"The problem with this is that police are now trained in a military mentality. Peace officers traditionally have been taught to de-escalate situations, using minimum force to deliver a suspect to a court of law. Now, special tactics units are instructed as a soldier during boot camp "to use maximum damage on enemy personnel."
The shooting of this hapless pet deeply means something to those that can see what is going on around them.
Lest you think I exaggerate, my local police department owns this tank.

Cobb police add tank to arsenal

Cobb police have a new tank. The vehicle is being driven by Detective Steve Brawner as Sgt. Lester Maddox directs him into position. Cobb County police unveil its new crime-fighting machine, The L.A.V. 300 (Light Armored Vehicle) at Marietta Square on Saturday.

OK. So, when those very same islamists/terrorists stage a "Mumbai style" attack in your home town, who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters? Not the Military; Posse Comitatus, and all that. To deal with this threat, you need people who are better trained and better equipped than the terrs. As things now stand, that means SWAT and SWAT-like teams.

They are also needed to tackle MS 13 type gangs. Until somebody comes up with a better solution, THEY are IT.

You seem to equate our wonderful American Military with our local police departments across our country.

No, but there are many similarities. For instance they are both fighting against Barbarism.

The development of SWAT teams...started a dangerous trend.

...acceptance of a paramilitary mentality within police departments across the country.

Here, I find we must disagree.

Now most police departments wear black or subdued militaristic uniforms with baseball caps and patches almost identical to various military uniforms.

Are you talking about SWAT teams, or regular uniformed police? If the latter, it requires documentation.

Paramilitary Police forces have become a symbol of the pervasive governmental intrusion in our everyday lives.

You need tp be aware that many people do not share this opinion.

Now, special tactics units are instructed as a soldier during boot camp "to use maximum damage on enemy personnel."

This sentence is substantially changed from the original report. I doubt that this phrase is taught in normal military training. I SERIOUSLY doubt that it is used in SWAT training; it would be counterproductive, in most situations encountered. It is absurd to imagine that this is a part of standard police training.

This article, and the postings on this thread, DO point out a problem, maybe THE major problem. Many officers are becoming estranged from the people they serve. Of the many reasons for this, perhaps the ugliest is that too many people have chosen to hate, lie about, belittle, and think the worst of, ALL police.

You should know, that this attitude (and much worse) was levied against Vietnam Vets, for many years. When we pull out of Afghanistan, and it turns into a "killing field," I predict that the same will be done to those Vets, too.
