VANITY: Is "Las Chicas de Moda" an appropriate name for a school chorus for girls?

Hi all. My 11 year old daughter has joined the girls chorus at her school. The chorus just decided its name will be "Las Chicas de Moda." My daughter doesn't like the name. She wanted it to be "Voces Scholasticae" (Latin for School Voices).

Question: does this name sound inapproriate? To me it sounds slutty. I've told her teacher we don't like the name but they are pretty much saying it's a done deal (the first concert just happened).

Any thoughts/comments/suggestions/linguistic or cultural analysis of "Las Chicas de Moda" would be great!

Your experience clearly exceeds mine. My only acquaintance has been with “sweet” stuff, or things that looked like they would be. That soured me on everything else. Given what you said, I’ll try the “bread” stuff next time it’s offered.

Well how about this. I went to the monthly dinner at my mother in law’s extended care facility and for entertainment they had belly dancers...... from the senior citizens center. Some had exposed belly buttons but all had elaborate costumes. I looked on the web and it is an exercise industry.

Well, I don’t know, but translated into english, Chicas sounds like Chicks, and it’s probably why we say that, not because of barnyard fowl, but the poster needs to understand that in Spanish, chica and chico just mean girl and boy. Period, end of. It’s the official word for them, it’s not slang, it has no special connotations. I would say that the name Chicas de Modas is about as racy as a name like “The Spice Girls.”

1) Why is a school singing group even having its own special name?

2) MD is full of...uh, OK, I won’t say it. I’ll probably get booted. They seem to have gotten word from the numerous relatives in NJ that MD is “open”. It certainly wasn’t like this until the last 10 years. That was after I returned from CT, which east end in mid-’90s was also plentiful with....Mexicans.

3) Why must everything be in Spanish? I really don’t care how many are here.

4) I just realized there is even more to the (Brit-based) Sprout children’s channel than I already thought. The annoying chicken in the morning is a female called “Chica” (chicken/girl/Spanish). Another way they’re trying to indoctrinate the children into accepting and embracing “hispanics”. They frequently feel the need to tell our kids how to say things in....Spanish.

I’ll bite, what in the world sounds slutty about Las chicas de moda? Voces Scholasticae would be appropriate if they’re singing something extremely highbrow like Italian opera, but somehow I doubt that’s the case.
