An 8-year-old boy from Taunton was sent home from school and ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after drawing a stick-figure picture of Jesus Christ on the cross, according to the Taunton Daily Gazette.
The paper is reporting the boys father was called earlier this month by Maxham Elementary School officials who informed him his second-grade son had created a violent drawing. An image of the drawing published on the papers Web site shows a crucified Jesus with Xs over his eyes, signifying his death.
The paper did not identify the father, who asked for anonymity to protect his son.
As far as Im concerned, theyre violating his religion, the father told the paper.
He added his son drew the picture shortly after visiting the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attelboro to see its Christmas display. He made the drawing in class after his teacher asked the children to sketch something that reminded them of Christmas, the father said.
A call placed by the Herald to Taunton Superintendent Julie Hackett was not immediately returned.
Ch 4 Boston just did a report on this. They said the father, an African-American, is named Chester Johnson. Don’t know if race card plays into it—I think the teacher was just upset by the “violence” in the pic
I pick B, C and D together.
>>The story does end on a happy note. The father of the student has been given permission for his child to attend another school in the district. They should have transferred the teacher and the administrators instead, preferably to quiet rooms with as little contact with children as possible. The real threat here is that the gross stupidity will infect the students.
To maintain my sanity, I try to look at it this way: It takes extreme effort for school officials to be so stupid.
We might be responding under some notion that public school teachers actually have knowledge. It’s quite possible that the teacher had never been exposed to the story of the Christ’s crucifixion. Perhaps she grew up in a neighborhood of gangs and mayhem.
Just sayin’
OMG!! This can NOT be happening.....please tell me this is from The Onion!!!
THAT is Beautiful!!
It’s Massachusetts. It must be true.

>> Chester Johnson told WBZ-TV that his son made the drawing on Dec. 2 after his second-grade teacher asked children to sketch something that reminded them of the holiday.
>>Johnson said the teacher became upset when his son said he drew himself on the cross. Johnson, who is black, __told WBZ he suspects racism is involved__. He said he thinks the school overreacted and wants an apology.
That picture is so beautiful! I’m printing it out and keeping it.
It’s another Balloon Boy. The Boston Globe posted a follow up story today: http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/12/16/taunton_officials_dispute_reports_on_jesus_sketch/
The father keeps on asking for money. First he says “They owe us a small lump sum for this,” and then he says “I also think they should give him a fully paid scholarship to the school of his choice. We should be compensated for our pain and suffering.”
So it’s all about money. And being famous.
