New York Yankees have quite a catch in Curtis Granderson, who's a leader on and off field
Curtis Granderson laughs at the memory now, but when he saw that the letter had come from the baseball commissioner's office, his first thought was, "Did I do something wrong?"
What Granderson found when he opened the envelope, however, "was amazing," he says, and the letter sits in one of his parents' scrapbooks to this day.
The Yankees' newest star had gotten a letter from commissioner Bud Selig earlier this year praising Granderson's work as a baseball ambassador during offseason clinics in places as far-flung as China and South Africa. In part, the letter read, "There are so many fine young men playing Major League Baseball today, but I can think of no one who is better suited to represent our national pastime than you."
"He is an extraordinary young man," Selig said in a telephone interview last week. Selig likens Granderson to the Yanks' Derek Jeter.

PLEASE DON’T RUB IT IN! GRANDERSON WAS MY TIGER AND NOW THEY TRADED HIM! :(
Great story but can he hit lefties?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m still upset with Dumbrowski for trading him. He and Polanco were two of my favorite Tigers.
Polanco is gone too?
Might as well trade Verlander while they’re at it. sheesh.
You guys got some good players in return, though. It may be one of those trades that hurts now, but a year or two back, you’ll have 2-3 contributors.
What was the reason? Is his contract coming up soon?
yes
Nope.
He’s a .240 hitter. Nuf ced.
Chicago area kid. The Cubs screwed up by not getting Granderson. They haven’t had a true lead-off guy since Lofton.
