I love these shows. Have every season that are on DVD. I have not seen this episode, but every episode they make are “ripped from the headlines” so this is a true story most likely. I won’t see this episode until the DVDs come out which for this season should be around twenty years from now...lol.
They are ripped from the headlines but, quite often, painted with a Politically Correct brush.

I stopped watching them years ago because all the “alleged perpetrators” were white. All the crimes were white on white
The writers at L&O would change the story lines so that it was white people doing the crimes, especially the more egregious.
I follow the news, and could usually tell EXACTLY which real-life crime that the story was derived from.
But it was always white folks doing it in the L&O episode.
You need to watch this one.
This is not “ripped from the headlines” other than the evil talk show host who is a Rush caracature, cigar and all. Along with the Tea Party protesters, one being the killer of little kids.

Years ago the old Dragnet series with Jack Webb used to begin by saying "The story you are about to see is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent."
In Law and Order the story may be "ripped from the headlines" as you say but in most cases not only are the names changed but also the races, creeds and colors of the original story have been changed too to make them more PC.
