At least one person (me) running XP had nothing forced on him. You need to double-check that statement.

et moi also — four XP machines here — no automatic updates ever all the time, zero zip nada. Sometime when I get around to it, I will check out the updates and pick and choose (after the auto-update guinea pigs have done their job)

well, I got it this morning and when I walked away to make my tea and came back my computer said it was restarting but it didn't. I just had to shut it off.
