Report: Use of 'hostesses' probed (U Tenn)
ESPN ^ | December 9, 2009 | Staff

The NCAA is probing Tennessee's football recruiting practices, according to several prep prospects, their family members and high school administrators, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Much of the investigation is centered on the use of recruiting "hostesses" who have helped the program convince prep prospects to choose Tennessee by befriending prep prospects and attending their high school games, according to the report. Because the hostesses are considered an extension of the university, it could be considered a violation of NCAA rules if they helped recruit prospective athletes off campus.

Doesn't sound as bad as some of the stories about what SMU boosters during the pre-death penalty days, did to get recruits to go there. The "hostess" did much more than just show up at a recruit's game.

SMU got penalized the first time for paying off players. The second time they got caught Governor Clements, who was one of the “boosters” said since they had made the recruits the promises they had to keep their word. Then came the “death” penalty.

When I was at UF, everybody knew about the “Gator Getters.” This stuff has been going on for years at a lot of schools.

“Gator Getters.”

WOW!!! That is too much. LOL!! I wonder if they sent for Tebow knowing that might not work or actually backfire with his strong Christian faith.

I always heard about verbal commitments. This article is referencing ‘oral’ commitments. Not sure if thats the normal nomenclature or not?

This is nothing new. Hostesses and "tutors" have long been used to attract recruits. For so many recruits, football and facilities were #1, sex was #2, the college was #3, the location was #4, education was #5.

Man, Tennessee has took a beating these last few years... I get a feeling there is gonna be some major house cleaning coming up. There is just too much love of their program up there not to clean it up again.

Note: Not a Tenn fan here.

Lots of red in the picture. Must be used to signal if “business” is open or closed. Even a small red light bulb in the light at the right of the door. Obviously, this is a “red light” district somewhere.

If Tiger knew perhaps he would of not spent that one year at Stanford although I never heard of “hostesses” being used for golf recruits. ;)
