As you know, the General had no children of his own and was a terrific stepfather to Martha's two children. Tragically, they both died young, and General Washington devoted much love and energy to his nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Also, the Bill of Rights was not added to the Constitution until 1789...largely due to the efforts of George Mason (though Madison introduced it).
Perhaps the very high price paid for this letter written by the greatest Amercian owes its worth to the current need to re-examine the Constitution and understand how we have strayed.
