If you want usable coverage everywhere, ATT is pretty much the only choice.

Crap. My home and my vacation home must be the only two places that ATT doesn't have coverage. < /sarcasm>

Well that's not quite true, my son and daughter who have ATT and live in Baltimore have crap coverage just about everywhere they go. My daughter switched to Verizon but my son has an iPhone so is just living with the lousy coverage, but is not a happy camper.

On the other hand, I have never found anywhere that I have been that I did not have coverage with Verizon.

And what devices are you using with ATT? Their problem seems to be that some of the handsets they sell are really stinkers. The iPhone isn’t, but there have been some software updates to it that can improve it immensely.

We’ve got literally thousands of hours in field tests of the major wireless networks. None are perfect, but the one with the most coverage is, still, ATT.
