Group A South Africa Mexico Uruguay France
Group B Argentina Nigeria Korea Republic Greece
Group C England USA Algeria Slovenia
Group D Germany Australia Serbia Ghana
Group E Netherlands Denmark Japan Cameroon
Group F Italy Paraguay New Zealand Slovakia
Group G Brazil Korea DPR Côte d'Ivoire Portugal
Group H Spain Switzerland Honduras Chile
Hey England, can you say, “1950”!
Group D Germany Australia Serbia GhanaUgh; not good.
Fascinating...nah, not really
I don’t know that there’s a group of death but Group E (Netherlands Denmark Japan Cameroon) looks difficult if only because of the parity between the sides.
The Dutch can probably count on advancing past the group stage. Denmark have shown quality at times and Japan always seem capable of a shock result. Cameroon are not the giant killers of the Roger Milla days but it’s hard to write off any African nation in a single match especially when the WC is finally on their continent.

Die Mannschaft will have their hands full. Australia should have beaten Italy in the last WC.
Oh boy a soccer-bashing post. We were afraid you were going to wait until the event actually began.
Get your thesaurus warmed up!
It looks like it was fascinating enough to get you to click on this thread and then post a comment.
Oh, you again...should’ve known.
Of the countries that were in the first round (32 countries) in 2006, the following are missing this year:
Ecuador, Poland, Costa Rica, Sweden, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Angola, Iran, Czech Republic, Croatia, Togo, Ukraine, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia.
The country with the smallest population base to make the initial cut this time is Slovenia (2 million), followed by Uruguay (3.5 million) and New Zealand (4.2 million).
What are you doing on FR? I figured you’d already be tailgating.
As even as the groups seem to be, I think D is the toughest. USA lucked out. Is it June yet?
Nah, couldn’t make it to Atlanta, but I’m there in spirit.
Thanks to Jonathan Bornstein. I was so glad to see Costa Rica lose to Uruguay.
Spain is also very strong these days.
The prospect of Diego Maradona holding up the FIFA Cup trophy is all the more reason I’d like either Germany, Brazil or Spain to win it all.
Group A: I'm going with Mexico and South Africa (figuring karma will do for France after the Henry Hand Ball)
Group B: Argentina and Greece
Group C: England, USA
Group D: Germany, Ghana (I am about equal on Ghana and Australia actually- a toss up there Ghana because it's in Africa)
Group E: Holland, Cameroon
Group F: Italy... ? Doesn't really matter. Go with European team. Slovakia
Group G: Brazil and Ivory Coast (this is the group of death)
Group H: Spain, Switzerland
First knockout round:
Mexico beats Greece.
Argentina beats Bafana Bafana
England defeats Ghana
Germany wins over USA
Holland beats Slovakia
Italy beats Cameroon
Brazil defeat Switzerland
Spain defeat Ivory Coast
Quarterfinals
England defeat Mexico
Germany defeat Argentina
Brazil defeat Holland
Spain defeat Italy
Semis
England defeat Germany
Brazil defeat Spain
Finals hopefully England defeat Brazil
Would like to see Ivory Coast upset all my careful selections and make it past Spain. I hope I got all the matchups correct after the group stages- otherwise it completely changes everything.
It shouldn’t be France, they robbed the Irish with a handball. I’m hoping they don’t make it past the first round.
