World Cup Stadium 'Cow Sacrifice' Plan Sparks Row
Animal sacrifice is a vital part of life for many South Africans. A proposal to bless South Africa's World Cup stadiums by slaughtering a cow in each one has caused concern among animal rights activists.
The Makhonya Royal Trust, which put forward the idea, described the cattle killing ritual as a "true African" way of blessing the 2010 tournament.
Government minister Sicelo Shiceka has promised to lobby football's governing body, Fifa, in support of the plan.
But animal rights groups have demanded to be consulted over the plans.
The row comes as a South African judge refused to stop a separate traditional Zulu bull-killing ceremony from going ahead on Saturday, instead calling on parliament to look at the issue.
The National Council for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has written to Fifa over the World Cup issue.
The BBC's Mohammed Allie in Cape Town says the NSPCA does not object to the ritual slaughter of animals.

ping us when they start wanting to sacrifice humans.
What’s the big deal? Why can’t these libs tolerate the religious beliefs of others, no matter how different they may be?
I mean, really, I’m a tad curious as to how many of these activists would be the same people throwing a fit if someone raised complaints about an Islamic ceremony being performed in a London stadium...
BS
Can’t they just throw a virgin into the volcano?
Boy, they sure know how to throw a tailgate party!
The Indians will not appreciate this. Not one bit.
Those idiots are actually going to finish the stadiums in time? They were supposed be done already.
Of course it’s hard to allocate resources to building the stadiums when you need to spend even more to clean up your city so the fans won’t see the slums and squatter shacks on the way. They also need to build public transportation so the fans can get to the stadiums in the first place.
It was a real gamble to have the World Cup anywhere in Africa.
What if Obama pardons it?
Heck, dig a pit at midfield and hold a barbecue afterward. Something for everyone. Well, almost everyone.
In these tough economic times, we all need to make sacrifices. That’s why I propose building altars in every city, state and country and sacrificing politicians until matters improve.
This is great, but it will take more then a cow to make sure a event this big gets pulled off without a hitch.
