I just keep wondering - why does he need to do anything about a relatively minor fender bender? It isn’t like he was caught with an underage girl, drugs or breaking into someone’s house. They’ve even said alcohol wasn’t a factor. As far as I know, we can all leave our homes in our vehicles, at whatever time we wish, for whatever reason. If it was an argument between husband and wife, whatever. I don’t care.
And if there is an affair, it’s still their business. Sad, but private. Tiger Woods owes me no explanation about what is going on in his marriage.

I suspect the reckless destruction of public property (water hydrant) makes for the public inquiry as to the causes that led to the incident.
The police can now file spousal abuse charges without either one of the couple pressing charges. I think this change sprang from women refusing to press charges when beaten.

There are public externalities when celebrities are corrupted.
Tiger has been one of the few black celebrities associated with being a ‘family man’, countering the stereotype of marital infidelity being a racial characteristic. Adding insult to injury, the tabloid reported affair also adds fuel to the stereotype that black men, if they become successful, will not marry or even cheat with a black woman.
The events not only effect that particular marriage, they influence the public perception of the institution of marriage.
