Michelle Obama Goes Glam For State Dinner [Described as "Regal Attire" By Designer Naeem Khan]

Michelle Obama Goes Glam For State Dinner (with a dress by little-known designer Naeem Khan)

Looking glamorous in an elegant strapless gown by Indian-American designer Naeem Khan, Michelle Obama welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Mrs. Gursharan Kaur to the White House Tuesday night and ushered in the Obama administration's first official state dinner.

Though she's become known for her (sometimes controversial) high-fashion risk-taking, tonight Mrs.Obama chose a dress with a classic floor-length cut in a subdued gold fabric and paired it with a light shawl. Her makeup was kept to a minimum and her hair done in a dignified updo. The entire ensemble seemed traditionally feminine and sophisticated, reminiscent of the first lady's more conservative predecessors.

But there were a few Michelle-style flourishes, including a pair of elaborate chandelier earrings and a stack of glittering gold-and-diamond bangles piled high on her left arm. Her choice of Khan as designer is also characteristic of this first lady, who often favors little-known artisans over big names. Khan has been on the fashion scene since 2003, and has outfitted youthful celebrities such as Beyoncé, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Lopez. He has also dressed dignitaries like Queen Noor and designed the costumes for the 2006 movie "Dreamgirls."

Tonight's look may mark a sartorial departure for Mrs. Obama, a shift into more sophisticated, luxurious, and regal attire, rather than the playful, accessible, less-polished clothing she's worn thus far.

Very nice dress, good hairstyle, happy face, trapezius muscles a little over-developed, but she looks good.

The jewelry does look good with the dress, but all those bangles are maybe a little wanna-be considering the occasion - "look, I'm wearing bracelets from your culture."

I agree. It’s absolutely the best she’s ever looked.

At last, Michelle dresses like a first lady, wearing something with simple lines in elegant fabric. Maybe this is the start of a new trend in her dressing—the old trend was hurting my eyes.

She looks great. I just wish she could understand that as The First Lady she should always look elegant and beautiful.

When you do not look elegant the photographers should not be allowed to even get close to you much less take a picture.

Beautiful dress (finally!) but she’s too old to be going strapless. To look good in a strapless dress, certain aspects of one’s body still need to be young and (ahem!) perky, PLUS you need serious boning in the dress or, preferably, a serious undergarment that really pushes everything upward. Looks like she has relied on the less successful expedient of just making the dress very tight across the boobs. Certainly, that will hold up the dress, but it doesn’t look good. She STILL needs a good wardrobe consultant!

Is that the guests all taking pictures of the table with their cellphones, or is it an advance press viewing of the day-cor?

Sterling silver sequins on that dress? Sterling silver?????????? What? no diamonds?
How much did that dress cost us?

It's a nice dress but not on her. wrong color. She sticks out like a sore thumb and that upper chest flab is unattractive. How much Miracle Grow did she use on her boobs?

I have nothing nice to say or think about her. That sterling silver disgusts me. Can't wait to see the tarnish on that dress in a year.

It's a probability thing, compounded by relative cell counts.

Some folks have MORE of a chance simply because of the cell counts ~ but her mother doesn't have it, nor do any of her female relatives ~ 'cause you'd know about it if they did.
