This is NOT a litmus test. It would help to read the entire article. It is a very scholarly article for sure written with a sense of diligent theological inquiry.

The article is not a litmus test, but many of the responses to the article are. That’s why I directed my comments to Freepers, not the author.

Thank you. I wish FReeper folks would read the entire article before making off the cuff evisceral comments only because it is an acute and succinct theological inquiry- the stuff of scholars.

I would guess that seeing as how he is the “late”, he knows the answer.

It makes no difference and wouldn't even be brought up if the anti-Rommney folks here weren't so scared to death of him as a threat to Palin—a position that I still can't figure out.

(OpeEdMunkey Since Aug 26, 2008)

There was life at freerepublic before you showed up three days before Palin was chosen for veep. People here even had discussions on Mitt Romney and other topics years before you signed up, or had ever heard of Sarah Palin.

That is one long article.

I cannot render an opinion on Mormonism at this point. I’m a little distracted on the subject.

Mormons do seem to be clean living.

Of course, they did do that massacre back in the day and they are clannish, but that can be a good thing.

Joseph Smith is in all likelihood a fraud. His assistant even admitted that they made up the Book of Mormon. And there are several big Mormon bishops who have been banished from the mormon world for saying things inappropriate about Mormonism.

As for me, I got no problems with Mormons. They are a clean living lot.

I guess Lutherans aren't Christians either. They believe in Martin Luther. Woooooooo!

Well Catholics and all the other Christians say that Lutherans are Christians. Catholics and all the other Christian churches say that Mormonism is not Christian.

Mormons are good people. They are NOT God’s people!

Mormons are not Christian, and they never have been. They are not Christian for two main reasons, namely, they reject the foundation of the Christian faith, The Holy Trinity, and the doctrine on Christ. Mormons worship a different god than Christians do, and they worship a different christ than Christians do. The faith of the Mormons is incompatible of Christianity.

By the way, Lutherans do not worship Martin Luther. Lutherans respect some of the things that Luther taught, but he is a human being like all the rest of us. He is not a prophet, nor is he infallible. He is certainly not our Savior.

I think this is the funniest response yet...other religions basically “voted” that Lutherans were Christians so they are, they voted Mormons aren’t, so they aren’t. You can’t be serious! I followed the penecostal faith until my 20’s, so I would have been “voted” as Christian, now am LDS and would now not be a Christian if the voters are correct. Gee, I think I pretty much know whether I was a Christian then and whether I am one now without having to have the votes tallied.

I’m not aware of any “vote”, do you have a source for that?

If you inquire of each church you will discover that none of them accept Mormon Baptism, but they do accept fellow Christians.

The Greek Orthodox and the Catholics and the various Protestants did not vote, they all just reached the same conclusion on Mormonism.

“and even if we do, what difference will it make?”

The difference is one of eternal life. No one can come to the Father except through the Son. The Mormons know neither the Father nor the Son. They worship a false god. Would you not say that this is important?

It is not that I say that Mormons worship a false god, but it is the Scriptures that say it. If you hold to the basic law of logic, non-contradiction, something cannot be and not be at the same time. If the Mormons are right, then the entire Christian church is wrong. What Mormons believe and what the Christian church believes are contradictory.

It is really sad that non-mormons profess who we are and what we believe when you don't have a clue. I worship the same God and Christ now as I did when I wasn't LDS, we don't “worship” Joseph Smith, nor do we believe as a prophet he was infallible. Prophets have never been infallible, remember Moses not seeing the promised land? Nor is he our Savior. If you are going to stand in judgement of us, as least have your facts correct.

So the majority is always correct, like in the case of Obama winning the election...I get it now!

“If you inquire of each church you will discover that none of them accept Mormon...”

Why should anyone give a flip about what one denomination thinks or says about the legitimacy of another?

What all the various Christian Church's scholars agree on, is definitely worth notice of any Christian lay person, for one thing it will make that individual Christian less likely to be sucked in by cults.

You mean sucked in like all the Christians who send money to televangelists so they can heal people over the airwaves?

In addition, mormonism was a frequent topic long before Mitt Romney ever ran for President. Discussions on mormonism became much more lively when all the Mittens suddenly showed up on FR.
