Adam Lambert Shocks American Music Awards With Racy “For Your Entertainment”
Rolling Stone ^ | 11/22/09 | staff

Adam Lambert aimed for the kind of controversy Britney Spears and Madonna are known for generating, completely stunning the audience at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre and the millions watching the American Music Awards live on ABC.

Glambert definitely delivered on his promise of a “sexy” performance as he closed the live show with simulated oral sex from a male backup dancer, a brief make-out session with his male keyboardist and a giant mirrored prop so the audience could see the looks on their own shocked faces.

Rolling Stone has learned that producers weren’t informed about the guy-on-guy kiss in advance, and after the show, Lambert told RS the musician he kissed is a straight man.

Lambert also told RS that if ABC decides to cut any parts of his performance for the West Coast rebroadcast, it would amount to “discrimination.”

Lambert strutted across the Nokia Theatre stage, dragging some of his dancers outfitted in S&M gear by harnesses and stopping to caress the legs of others — both men and women. As his band turned out the techno-crunch of his debut single from For Your Entertainment (out tomorrow), Lambert bounced around the stage in black leather, hitting his signature high notes. During the bridge, he sat on a chair below a female stripper on a pole, then made his way back across the stage, singing, “Do you like what you see? Let me entertain you until you scream” as the lyrics to his song (”Can you handle what I’m about to do?”) came off like a direct challenge to the audience.

Britney Spears and Madonna stole headlines for their lip-lock at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, which was also where Madonna turned heads for humping the floor during her rendition of “Like a Virgin.”

With this act, he has boxed himself into the gay crowd. Not too many entertainers, even those openly gay in their off stage lives, restrict their stage genre that way.

Why didn’t they give a choice “Crappy song either way”? Thanks for the links. Performance was just ugly all around.

As talented as Adam was in Wicked, I am so dissapointed.

He doesn’t need disgusting sexual theatrics and that crap just destracted from his normally decent vocals.

My thoughts exactly. I just wonder what advice Freddie Mercury would have for Lambert(?)

The song is not that bad. If he had only sung it with his usual skill and heart, and left everything to words and innuendo, it would be a huge hit. There was no need to pounce around orgiastically with all the people on stage.

One thing I appreciated about him on Idol was his obvious intelligence and kindness. It made me think he was considerate.

His fans were of all genders and ages. All of them were considerate of HIM, allowing him to be openly gay and live his life, and they were ready to buy his music.

He showed total lack of consideration for his fans tonight so I am reconsidering my opinion on his intelligence.

Sexy is one thing. Trashy trying-too-hard groping and forcing is definitely NOT sexy. It is offensive, especially to all of his younger fans, and plenty of the older ones too.

Subtlety is an art, Adam.

Madonna never did anything equivalent to this, in this type of venue, at this point in her career.

This kid is just stupid.

And yet if the straight man had beaten the crap out of Lambert for his public assault, he would have been the one charged with an anti-gay hate crime.

Yes. So often it seems to come down to this. The "live and let live attitude" works for "me but not thee."

If he wanted attention, a good performance and lack of trashygay would have made news.

Funny what’s considered cutting edge in 2009. Jim Morrison (The Doors) was doing this sort of thing —and getting arrested for it— back in the 60s. Everything old is new again I guess. If Adam Lambert had really wanted to shock people he should have come out and waved an American flag and done a shout out to the troops. That would have been really edgy.

Ditto that. At least they kept it classy and dignified.... and the country stars actually have real talent.

Now that Ellen DeGenerate is a judge, I'm out. Idol started out as fun but it's evolved into trash.

Hmmmm, sounds like a peep show. A truly talented person wouldn’t have to prostitute themselves and fellow performers.
