Ingenious way to market a movie.

Good opportunity to post that I absolutely loved that movie. Saw it 4 times in the theatre and already own the dvd. A masterful job of creating a great all new film and blending in tons of material from the Star Trek series and movies.

This sort of thing happens with some frequency. Some other examples:

The Millennium Falcon was painted black and placed on its end as a building in Blade Runner.

The USS Enterprise NCC 1701 was dimly in the background in the civilian fleet of the new Battlestar Galactica.

The main characters from the West Wing were listed on a casualty list on Star Trek Voyager. RIP Commander J Bartlett.

Mickey Mouse is one of the critters in Gremline. Seen from the rear as the Gremlins are gathered in the theater.

When Spock and Kirk confront V’ger in space outside the Enterprise and the clouds shift form, momentarily it takes the form of Miss Piggy.

There's a host of SciFi Geek fodder in Trek:

Star Trek and Doctor Who have a number of running "in jokes" and in ET, the line "this isn't fantasy, this is reality" (response to "can't he just beam up") was responded to by Kirk (I think STIII) "this isn't reality, this is fantasy"

0_o Uh, the jock bullies were right, I am a geek!
