A DEADLY plague could sweep across Europe, doctors fear, after an outbreak of a virus in Ukraine plunged the country and its neighbours into a state of panic.
A cocktail of three flu viruses are reported to have mutated into a single pneumonic plague, which it is believed may be far more dangerous than swine flu. The death toll has reached 189 and more than 1 million people have been infected, most of them in the nine regions of Western Ukraine.

Bammy and his minions would love to get a hold of this virus and spread it here. An argument for National Health Care.
re: death toll has reached 189 and more than 1 million people have been infected
Huh? 189 deaths out of more than a million who’ve gotten the virus? That seems a very small death toll. What am I missing?
If you do the math, the death toll is extremely low, .0189%
189 in a million would be a death rate of about of one in five hundred or 0.2%. Is that high for a normal flu?
I’m very suspicious of this story as it seems to have been flogged by a Ukrainian premier that is running behind in the polls.
Thinning the herd...
Oops. About 0.002%. Much smaller.
It’s hard to tell how reliable this information is. The fact that Victor Yuschenko is flogging this actually gave me pause because he doesn’t seem to scare easily - he was the one poisoned by rivals during the election.
if every many woman and child in the United States got infected then around 50,000+ people would die...or roughly 2.5 times the amount that die each year from the flu already.
“The fact that Victor Yuschenko is flogging this actually gave me pause because he doesnt seem to scare easily - he was the one poisoned by rivals during the election.”
Perhaps. But he’s a politician and losing power often seems worse than death. And I’m not saying he’s scared. To the contrary, I’m saying it sounds like a guy cynically turning a molehill into a mountain to close a big gap in the polls (which he is doing successfully).
If this virus is so bad, why has WHO stated it’s no different than the H1N1 virus?
Let’s be sure we don’t spread rumors. There are plenty of reasons why the H1N1 virus is apparently hitting the Ukraine harder than anybody else: bad health administration bad government, political intrigue. The last thing we need to do is spread panic.

And “elections may have to be canceled”, according to the story - simpily not letting a good crisis go to waste. More Hussein think spreading around the world, as it slowly turns back into countries ruled by tyrants.
A doctor in Western Ukraine who did not want to be named, said: We have carried out post mortems on two victims and found their lungs are as black as charcoal.
They look like they have been burned. Its terrifying.
This seems rather odd. I would think it is more likely these victims were coal miners.
re: likely these victims were coal miners
And smokers.
The state of journalism these days is so bad that it’s hard to believe anything you read, see or hear. It seems like every journalist, or source, has their own pet belief and report only things that will further that project.
I thought I saw another story trying to tie this in with the Spanish Flu of 1918 but I didn’t note that in this article.
Well it’s so bad that they are thinking of cancelling elections! WoW! Imagine that?
Election day.
If this flu breaks out of Western Europe and heads over to NA, it is entirely possible the same spread scenario will happen. How big is the election 2010? HUGE.
If Obama's numbers continue to slide, and this new flu hits the states next fall, do not be surprised if the election is postponed.
