Isolated location no place for such a public man to die
Chicago tribune ^ | November 17, 2009 | John Kass

Michael Scott made his living in Chicago politics as one of Mayor Richard Daley's guys out front.

The mayor put him on a series of public boards, from the Park District to the Chicago Board of Education. He made a decent living in real estate, and for 30 years he did what all front guys do:

Talk to reporters, sit in front of news cameras and lend his face to the mayor's policies and enterprise.

What's strange is that this very public man found an extremely private place to die.

The place where Scott was found early Monday, with a single gunshot wound in the head, is on the maps as part of the vibrant and high-tech River North neighborhood.

But actually, the place where he fell is a no-man's land along the North Branch of the Chicago River, a difficult place to reach, especially for a 60-year-old stumbling around in the pitch darkness, over uneven ground, with no light and no moon.

Visitors Monday to the spot where Scott died didn't see any police or security cameras that might have recorded Scott's last living seconds. With all the high-tech in Chicago, the spot where Scott died is seemingly off the grid.

It is not a place for public men like Scott. Rather, it is a place for homeless junkies and rats. It is a place to hide.

...It's certainly not a place for Daley's 1983 deputy campaign manager and, until Monday, the mayor's president of the Chicago Board of Education.

The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled Scott's death a suicide. But police aren't so sure.

Medical Examiner doesn’t want to learn first hand how it happened.

“It is not a place for public men like Scott. Rather, it is a place for homeless junkies and rats. It is a place to hide. “

Wrong!

That is precisely why it is the perfect place for him to die.

Maybe they can get the infamous Fahmy Malak, who managed to diagnose the decapitation of teenage drug-witnesses as death “due to natural causes”.

A documentary on Michael Scott’s demise could make a good two-hour
“Law And Order”.

Seeing how he was a long-time Chicago insider.
So who killed him:
“Silent partners” peeved that the investments made contingent
on getting the 2016 Olympics in Chicago went south?

OR

Rich parents that didn’t want Scott to spill the beans that he helped
their middling-student-child get into a premier Chicago school?

OR
Who knows what?

Anybody have a picture of that weird “suicide arm” thing
that was in the movie “Shooter”?

I’d have to go with the Death-by-Olympics theory.

Possibly there are other insiders who haven’t repaid their loans and Scott’s death was a warning to them (which is why there were no concrete overshoes).

And in Monday's daylight, after the TV cameras had left, it seemed reasonable that Scott could have easily made his way there.

But the night before, in the dark, it would have been all but unnavigable. He would have had to walk right under the cement counterweight for that old drawbridge, then scramble underneath an iron fence, then down a little embankment overgrown with weeds and strewn with trash.

He'd have walked over broken bottles, old rags from some homeless wanderer. There was a syringe on the ground.

This article is pretty goofy.

I don't think it's beyond the abilities of most 60 year old men to crawl under a fence and step fearlessly over weeds, broken bottles and rags, although that wounded syringe on the ground should have been able to hold him back.

The strongest evidence that he might have been killed is simply that it's Chicago and he was a politician. Trying to make the case based on the premise that he couldn't scramble down a dirty hill in the dark is dopey.

Was he queer, and did he know Obama? That seems to be the downfall of queers around Obama. Especially if he went to Wright's church.

Actually, it is quite puzzling WTH a rich white guy who enjoyed all the comforts, would go to all the effort to get out of his car and crawl down there in the dark, like a junkie, where junkies go, under a fence, over the rocks

His car was parked beside a dumpster... why not just get out of the car and shoot himself? So he didnt want to mess up the upholstery of the car? This matters how? Why go down in the dark and try to shoot yoourself in the head so you fall in the water? You want to drown if you miss?

This is all really screwed up, even for a suicide.

I think the article writer is just saying “Why would he scramble through all that cack to go kill himself”.

I mean - would you? Assuming you were suicidal, why bother slumming it? You’d prefer to go out in some style! At the very least you’d do it in some motel room, or on a beach at sunset or in a nice park like Mr Foster (!) - not next to some noisome aqueduct you had to crawl to in the dark.

teenage drug-witnesses as death “due to natural causes”.

If it was in Chicago, it probably was "natural".

If I committed suicide I’d do it like Vince Foster. I’d shoot myself, then roll myself up in a carpet, drive over to Fort Marcy Park and lie down with a different gun in my hand.

That’s how you do it. Kudos to Vince for the best arranged suicide ever. Not like Scott, who clearly wasn’t trying.

If I were planning to off myself, a dark hidden place under a bridge where I'd fall into a river would be as good a place as any. Better than most.

Wouldn't want to leave my blown off head where kids or somebody I cared about would have to find it.

When you're suicidal, I don't think you look for some sweet happy place to eat a bullet. You might choose a place more appropriate to the mood.

Just remember to use a hands-free cellular device if you do this. We don't tolerate unsafe driving around here.

Was he queer, and did he know Obama?

Someone should make a graph: "dead FOB" running over five presidential terms, where FOB = Friends of Bill, Friends of Bush and Friends of Bambi. I bet that would show some interesting correlations.

Doesn't sound like HE found a place to die, sounds like someone may have taken him to a little "out of the way" place for "a ride" and some fresh air.
