3/9/58 "Claim Jumpers" Program #6
John Dehner (J.B. Kendall), Eddie Firestone (Bill Richmond), Larry Dobkin, Jack Moyles, Vic Perrin ; Writer/Producer/Director - Antony Ellis ; Music - Wilbur Hatch ; Announcer - John Wald ; CBS ;
Kendall is traveling the Mullen Wagon Road on the way to Helena, Montana. His horse is lame. He comes across a seventeen year old boy on foot, Bill Richmond, from Fort Benton. They camp for the evening. Bill is a runaway from a family of nine children in Kentucky who is planning on digging for gold. They are joined by three prospectors who were attracted by their campfire, Jack Hinton, Rod Goodall, and Dawsey. The men start talking some gold mining tales. In the early morning Bill starts to shout excitedly that he has found gold. The prospectors want to know where Bill found it. They talk amongst themselves guardedly as Bill shows them where he found the gold. There is one rich vein, which looks to be worth $2000 per ton. Kendall tells Bill to be sure to register the claim in Helena, gives him a gun, and tells him not to tell any other strangers what he has found. J.B. then goes off to be with the other three. They look around the other gullies but they see nothing but low grade ore, not worth working. He listens as they begin to justify why they deserve part of the claim. Kendall says that they need to help Bill stake his claim that night, but they settle in for the evening when Kendall tells them he doesn't know how to file a claim. Later, Hinton says he and the boys will help Bill file his claim for even 1/5th shares all around, including Kendall. Bill and Kendall reject the offer. The three go off and confer again. Their next offer is 50% for them and 50% for Richmond and Kendall. Kendall rejects it. The three leave, but Kendall believes that they will return. That night they hide in the brush and around their fire they arrange the blankets to make it look like they are sleeping. The three come back and shoot into the blankets. Kendall pulls his gun on them. The next day Bill staked his claim, the three were taken to the sheriff's office. Bill made some good money from his claim, and he gave $1000 to Kendall, and took the rest back to his impoverished family.

I'm sure you'll make a fine choice. One of these days, I think I'll have to get a little deeper into cigars. Always did have a passing fancy for them. And a Sunday evening is the perfect moment.

A has-been writer, Phil Martin, with a severe case of writer's block, discovers a lost manuscript by Edgar Allan Poe and creates a new form of mystery novel. Phil's girlfriend is Ann Fleming, whose brother is "Kid Gloves" Fleming, a jailbird. Phil visits London where he tours the bomb damaged house where Edgar Allan Poe had resided and finds an unreleased short story manuscript by the master of mystery and horror. With a little rewrite, Phil becomes the next master of doom. After Phil wins an "Edgar Award" a Dr. Selgrove, a Poe researcher, phones Phil and says that he knows of the manuscript that Phil got from Mrs. Carruthers. Phil cuts off his relationship with Ann. Selgrove wants the manuscript as payment for his silence, but Phil had already destroyed it. Phil kills Selgrove and goes about establishing his alibi. He visits his old pal, Lieutenant John Kirkland. He learns that "Kid Gloves" has escaped prison but then was shot dead by the police. Kirkland gets a call, Ann is dead, by the hand of her brother, and she had been his time alibi for the Selgrove murder. Phil is arrested and convicted of the murder of Ann Fleming.

You, sir, are a gracious man. Nothing too expensive. My taste buds and conscience are both sensitive to such things. LOL

You like cigars? Do you follow Cigar Dave’s radio program out of the Cigar City, Tampa?

I'm a novice, not a virgin. LOL I know to clip the end and roll it around in my mouth, taste the smoke, don't inhale, etc. At least, that's what Hollyweird taught me. The bulk of my cigar experience comes from Backwoods Smokes and Swisher Sweets. Bourgeois, I know. LOL

Yes. I haven’t. Kept missing him and then was told his reviews are not that good; are more company promotion then real feedback.

Are you in Tampa?

Cigars are about slowly pulling cool smoke in your mouth, blowing it out, and tasting the remains. Smoke them slowly. Most enjoyable in a well ventilated area. Will have something in the mail in the next few days.

I am in Tampa. Dave is very conservative politically, and he imparts a lot of info about cigars in general on his show,... although I haven’t tuned into his show for quite a while mow.

I enjoy cigars ... maybe once a week on average. Tampa is HOT. I'm a Pennsylvania transplant who has never acclimated to summer in Tampa. Winters are very nice, though. You must be into cigars, no?

Love cigars and think a lot about a move to Florida. The softer economy there has me staying up here and being cold 6 months a year. Someday I’ll have a place in Palm Beach/Miami, Ft. Meyers/Keys. Should be fun finding the right spot.
