The Mountie then requested that (the) CBSA intelligence officer ... euthanize the moose based on his known familiarity with livestock, says an official report into the incident. The Mountie "then requested a local butcher divvy up the moose based on his known familiarity with the tastiness of moose,"...

I had an eight-point buck run into the driver side of my truck on Thursday.
After another guy and I drug it off the road a cop stopped by and dispatched it with his Glock.
Really trashed my truck.

“Canadas newly armed border guards have claimed their first victim: a hapless moose.”
The moose had nothing to declare.

Canadian border guards.
Doesn’t strike too much fear here folks.
About as potent as a U.N. peace keeping force in the mid east or africa.

The lead in to the article makes it sound as if the Mountie was just shooting a moose for the he** of it. He was, instead, rendering a service to the moose who would most certainly have died an extremely painful death had the Mountie not shot it.

‘The RCMP constable decided to put the moose out of its misery and prevent a possible highway accident, say documents obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act.
The constable discharged his pistol twice into the mooses head, which brought the animal to a stop but did not kill it.
The Mountie then requested that (the) CBSA intelligence officer ... euthanize the moose based on his known familiarity with livestock, says an official report into the incident.
The border services officer discharged one round from his CBSA duty pistol into the head of the moose, resulting in the death of the animal. ‘
Whatever rounds he was using, weren’t very effective.
