Royal Caribbean's new floating city arrived today at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., dwarfing apartment buildings and generally giving hope to a state soon to be deluged by sea level rise. Oasis of the Seas makes the Titanic look like a bath toy

That is, without a doubt, one of the ugliest water going sights I’ve ever seen.

The gearhead in me thinks this is awesome, and it’s a triumph of capitalism.
OTOH, I really don’t see the point. Maybe because I go on vacations to get away from people, not join a few hundred (few thousand?) going to the same place I am...
Then there’s the logistical aspect of offloading all those passengers in an emergency, or even just at port.

This will give you some reference to the authors frame of mind:
and doused by water cannons as she headed into her new home port Only those who attended riots on the wrong side would refer to a
Fire Boat as a water cannon.
Damed hippies, I thought they would all be dead by now.

I cannot imagine a worse vacation than being on a cruise ship, especially the biggest cruise ship with the most people, all telling you about their grandchildren or trying to sell you insurance.
