I believe he did, too. But if other ex-military are not supposed to salute out of uniform, why would the CIC salute? What is the proper way to respond to a marine’s salute of the president?
Post #11 changes the picture. He did get his hand on his heart so Hail to the Chief is out. Or not, he is a dufus.
You hit the nail on the head. It's no accident.
As a grizzled old vet, I am pleased and honored to once again be able to salute the flag while in civvies. As the other poster noted, this is a fairly recent change in the law to permit this. It was done at the instigation of veterans.
As for Mr. Bush saluting, he is a former vet so is able now to do so. I don’t know the rules regarding former presidents but I suspect they have the “right” to salute the flag or to render the proper honors at specific times.
Mr. Obama salutes only because he is required to. If he could get away without saluting, I suspect he would not.
Summertime for us means going to at least one Rodeo.
That is the only time we are in a public arena where the National Anthem is performed.
Chokes me up everytime.
Something about the Anthem along with the Rodeo Court on Horse Back and running around the Arena with the American Flag Flapping around that cowgirl on her Horse.
Now this is TWICE Obama clasped his hands instead of putting his hand over his heart.
And I bet if he had a hat on he would not remove it.
Shame on him, regardless of where ever his true loyalties are.
RULE 5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. ,,,,,,,,
graveyards are full of people that believed that
We need Tanya, the body expert on Fox, to interpret this “hands over the private area” thing. I would suspect it has something to do with his being gay..and maybe he saw Larry Sommers in the audience and HAD to cover it.
He’s not failing to remember to salute the flag of the US.He’s doing it on purpose.
I think he is still supposed to salute, since he is CIC. Crossing his heart works too.
George Bush was the president, therefore he was in the military. He was their Commander in Chief. Also, a military member not in uniform are technically supposed to just stand at attention.
I thought that rule was changed with regards to uniform.
Ronald Reagan started the presidential salute.
BTW I think the salute is 100% appropriate as we have the president as CiC and not some general.
We can now. I work on an AF base and you'd better believe if I'm outside at the end of the duty day, I will snap out my very best salute during the playing of the anthem.
LOL. I think you nailed it with your question. It's always about him. He's clueless when it comes to protocol.
Leave it to RR to make it look right. It’s just that seeing O salute feels so wrong, makes me squeamish.
I agree! I must admit I felt kind of choked up and nostalgic when I posted the picture. It made me think of that period of time when we were lucky enough to have President Reagan. He was a gem.
This picture was taken last Memorial Day while they were playing “Hail To the Chief” in which case Obama would not salute himself. It has been posted in some websites incorrectly stating that it was taken on Veterans Day at Ft. Hood during the playing of the National Anthem. Click here:
