I just let an anniversary go by unnoticed. I became a member of Free Republic on November 8, 1999. At that point in my life, I was a sophomore in college. Now, I'm a youngish professional with more than my fair share of grey hair already, and less than 8 months from reaching the "big" three-zero birthday.
First, I want to thank Jim Robinson and all those who maintain this wonderfully addictive website. I get most of my news off of here. It is such a clearinghouse for what's going on in there world
But more than that, it's a place where conservatives of many stripes to come and communicate in an online community.
Since that time, we've been through the 2000 election contest, 9/11, two wars, the deaths of a historic pope who helped bring down Soviet communism and the great President Reagan, and the election of the most left-wing president in our history.
I partially credit my conversations on FR's Religion Forum with helping me become more serious in my Catholic faith. I've met a lot of great Catholics on here. Thank you for your contributions, and for standing up for our faith.
I don't want to make this too long, but I hope Free Republic is still around ten years from now, and that our deep pride in our country, which is more than apparent, will help preserve it for future generations.
Esquire?
Noob...hehehe, LOL. Here’s to the Class of ‘98!
I think it was spelled it Echoir, if I am not mistaken. but it’s been a long time.
OMG!!! Yeah, that was him!!
There's quite a list!
Oh man, how could I forget the UNNNGH! thread! That’s one of my favorite FR memories!
You know you are really old when you remember the *P (Prodigy) White Water threads, a retread.
Newbee
Recall alt.current-events.clinton.whitewater and CNN Clinton Legal Battles board. Got called a few names at those places, but, led me here.
I was in Atlanta at the seige of CNN, great times. Met and FReeped with two of the three of the creators of that sign, Mass Exodus and ED Zep, good people.
Congratulations...a notable and worthy reason for celebration! : )
Congrats Pyro7480.
Hear, Hear!
When prodigy went down the tubes I picked up FR from a Conservitive Link site, the old Black Screen days, I can't remember when, maybe late '97, People Like Me. Except for a brief Hiatus been here ever since.
I had just started a new job, adverstised as temporary, near Sacramento, California. I was assigned a cubicle with an old codger. One of the most interesting people I ever met and a good man. Jim Carpenter, enjoy your retirement, on the other side, wherever you are.
After a couple of weeks he mentioned this forum on line that was a conservative site for news and conservative discussions. I was curious, went to visit and was hooked. It wasn't too long before I signed up and became a regular. I remember all the events, good and bad, that you mentioned.
Unfortunately, Jim R. decided to change the software that powered the site, and my original name and group number disappeared as a result.
So many great Freepers have come and gone; so many losers and convincing trolls as well. So many colorful characters we still mention from time to time.
I too, thank Jim providing a forum for us to scream, to vent, to exchange ideas and to make friends. It has been an interesting trip. I was not too thrilled with the early mods. Talk about misplaced PC! they hadn't among other things the slightest grasp of islam, or of the sophistication of trolls who tag-teamed to get other Freepers suspended or banned. Things have improved enormously the last couple of years. Reality has a way of doing that.
My "official" anniversary is next month, and I wiil be sure and celebrate appropriately.
Just for grins, here is my first succesful posted article ever, on September 21, 2001.
Congrats to you! My 10 year is later this month. It is truly weird how time goes by. I was in my 20s when I started on FR and now I’m in my 30s. How did that happen? And what an education FR has been. Vive FR!
Congratulations!
See you after the next 10!
It was fun reading your post. It will be 11 years in 11 days for me. When I first discovered Free Republic I couldn’t believe how alive the site was. It was thrilling. I had such a ball during the Clinton years. Thank you Jim Robinson!
Congrats on your anniversary newbie!
