SHERIDAN, Wyo. Retired orthopedic surgeon Chris Smith thought his hunt was over when he bagged a white tail deer with a bow and arrow near Sheridan. Because the light was fading, he decided to return the next day to recover the deer. But when he returned Wednesday morning, the carcass had been covered by grass and bush which is what mountain lions typically do.
Smith, who was unarmed, then saw the big cat about 25 yards away.....

Indeed. Better to run directly toward the bear with clenched fists and go out fighting like a man!
You are right about cleaning it. My dad would always clean the deer in the field right after the kill. He said this prevented the blood from the organs seeping to the muscle. It used to infuriate him to see dudes driving around with a buck tied on the truck to ‘show off’ their kill. He said they might as well take it to the dump.
Say what? Don't shoot unless you have a clear shot, preferably a head shot. Don't shoot unless you plan to field dress it right away, and then get the meat somewhere for further preparation. Our current debates are between hanging to age vs. butchering ASAP. Immediate field dressing is a given.
Nah - bears can out-run a person - and love to chase if a person runs. It’s not macho. The opposite advice applies if an alligator’s after you - always run - and in a slight zig zag pattern because gators on land slow down some when they change direction - - gives you a little “edge”...
The taste is somewhere between Manatee and Bald Eagle....
