Michelle Obama's cameo in cooking show (Iron Chef America)
NDTV ^ | 110409 | New York Times News Service

Alton Brown, the host of "Iron Chef America," fell into the turnip patch just before the show began taping several scenes outside the White House in late October. (The best stuff always happens off camera.)

On the episode, which will open the show's new season on January 3 on the Food Network, two pairs of chefs will compete: Cristeta Comerford, the White House executive chef, and Bobby Flay go up against the combined forces of Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse.

In a collision of politics, cooking and popular culture, Michelle Obama will reveal the secret ingredient that the chefs must use in their televised cook-off: anything that grows in the White House garden (no further spoilers here, though). She will also talk about her crusade to reduce childhood obesity through better school lunches, community gardens, farmers' markets and exercise, which around the White House has the working title Healthy Kids Initiative.

I was a little perturbed at Alton’s “sustainability” show last week, where he told us to stop buying tuna and only buy farm-raised trout.

Pretty heavy-handed throughout. At the end the show hectored us and said “If you go to a restaurant that doesn’t serve sustainable fish, ask...no, DEMAND, to speak to the manager and tell him to serve farm-raised trout!”

I don’t like being preached to, and if this is Alton’s new drift, I’m done watching Good eats.

I mean, what’s next...shows where he tells us to not eat pate de fois gras, tells us to not eat commercial chickens and eggs, and tells us to buy only free-range, organic turkeys?

Yuck.

I understand those shoes are very comfy. Chefs and cooks swear by them. Hubby even owns a pair but for crying out loud, you’re meeting the FLOTUS. You can dislike her as a person but she is still the FLOTUS.

At least wear some pants!!!!

Here’s the secret behind those awful dresses: there’s a conspiracy afoot to magically transform a hardened Chicago politico (Ms. Obama) into meek and mild Jackie Kennedy. Thus the pleated skirt dresses, silly little sweaters and appearances on cooking shows. The plan is that those who’ve always known her agenda will be lulled to sleep with all that suburbanite boringness and take our eyes off the ball. Hmm...no...not working, sorry.

Did you see post #41? That is the woman who is advising MO on her clothes. Do you see why she looks like a clown?

I enjoy the Food Network but if they want to push a WH agenda I don’t think its a wise move. I want entertainment not a lecture.

put on some long pants for Cripes sake...

Maybe he needs the ventilation..?? I'm glad he didn't change his wardrobe for ol' punkin face.

Mario has, by far, the best record among ICAs. I'm looking forward to this show. He has only been a contestant once in the last 12 - 18 months, I believe.

It will be interesting to see who will judge their cooking...

Good going on coordinating your dress with Batali’s shoes, Michelle.
