Here is dramatic video of Florida inmates saving the life of a deputy who was being attacked by another inmate. The deputy was caught in a choke hold when four other inmates came to his rescue, freeing him from the attack of the other inmate. . . . (VIDEO)

Sure were a lot of unsecured inmates running around, for good or bad.
Do inmates awaiting trial for assault, home invasion and attempted murder usually have the freedom to move about?
Time to remove the comfy chairs for the officers.
Amazing video - bravo to the inmates that saved him.
There are inmates out of their cells all the time. A unit with 104 inmates usually has 52 inmates out of their cell at any given time.
General areas, sure.
But in an area where the guard is sitting?
I’ve seen a few holding areas and jails, and none of them had the guard sitting out in the open with the prisoners. Usually behind bars or plexi.
A lot of newer prisons are set up where the guards are out in the open. I worked in a maximum security prison for 20 years and the units built in 1993 were just like the one in Florida. The inmates are all around you for most of the day. The only thing that looked unusual was there wasn’t a second officer in that unit.
Yikes.
One guy attacked that guard.
What if the others joined in?
Cynic here: what if it was a set-up to make four guys look good?
(I hope it wasn’t.)
Jails don’t primarily use the offense for determining classifications status. That said, it is no suprise other inmates helped out an officer. I’ve seen it myself. All people in jail aren’t terrible humans. Some don’t want to see an officer hurt or killed.I worked at a local jail. The “pod” consisted of 100 inmates and me.
